I really want to do one or the other... but i know it'll never happen. I'm just curious what everybody would do. what would you prefer, a 3.0-3.4 swap or a 2wd-4wd conversion?

I wish you would have put ARB locker in the rear as an option. Not more power and won't make it a real 4wd but would definately give you the most of your traction potential and allow you to put all your 3.0 power down to the ground.

Is your 4Runner an auto or 5-speed? I think doing the conversion to an auto truck would be a lot more work but I've never done it so what do I know. I've always converted my vehicles from auto to 5 speed but the one car I did for a buddy from 5 speed to auto was a monster of problems.
With a 5 speed you can get the transfer case and it is supported by the tranny rear mount and its mount to the tranny. Get the appropriate drive shafts from a 4x4 and that is probably the easy part. What I'm not so sure is easy is putting in the front differential. I venture to say that your frame doesn't have any of the correct hangers so now you are probably looking at an SAS. Can you see how this is snowballing?
If your 2wd takes you where you want to go now then get a locker in it to maximize the traction you have. I think the 3.4 swap would be cool - more power, better economy, and an available supercharger! If you are sure you need a 4x4 to get where you need to go then I think you will save $$$ by trading your truck in on one. Sorry, but the 4x4 swap could easily get into the $4000-6000 range once the SAS is factored in.

when i first created the thread i thought everybody would go for the 4x4 swap vs the 3.4 swap
thanks for the input everybody! not that i'll do anythign ever
actually... if i could "get it done" concerning the 3.4 swap... id do it if it was under 1.5k
although it does kinda piss me off that i just spent $2659.73 on my head gasget fix

If you're wanting a 4wd rig...you would probably be doing yourself a BIG favor by trading up to another rig with 4wd. From what I have heard, the 2wd-to-4wd conversion is not worth the hassle.
Engine conversions are slightly less cumbersome (only slightly).
Just my 2-cents,
Jim

If you just go out and buy a new rig its not as fun as modding your old one. Plus if you do a mod on that kinda scale it makes your truck REALLY unique and REALLY yours, your everyday driver isn't going to care to do that to his/her vehicle. It also builds pride in your truck. Building up your ris is kinda like child bearing for guys. Show some love to your old rig don't just set it aside for a new one, Yotas have feelings too
