1983 toy, 4.10 gears. Currently runnin 35"s, next week doing a complete overhaul on er, rebuild motor, tranny, tcase, paint it all up and put some 36 TSL's under her. Mah roomates a PROFESSIONAL welder, debatin wether to hand him my 3rd member and tell him to do er up. If welded RIGHT, and with strong penetration, should this hold up for a lightly driven DD????????? Whats the chances I'm gonna be (stuck) on the side of the road oppose to riding it on out for 3 years and going???? Heard stories relatin to both but just want some re assurance, no personal oppions really, just fact,.....................................

 

OK... here's a fact. For a lightly driven DD, you don't need a "lincoln locker".

Seriously, though. If you want to lock it, drop in a cheap lunchbox locker or something. Driving 36" tires, I'd be surprised if you don't break the welds sooner rather than later if you weld it up. And your ride on pavement certainly won't be good. Finally, with the price of tires these days (especially 36"), you certainly don't want to be eating through them everytime you go around a turn.

Fact: Welded on a dd will suck big taters.

3. Foul Language And Racial Slurs
Foul language - this also includes trying to get around the word censor using words to replace the "F" word (and others).
We do let a few words slip by that you will hear on Primetime TV, but some words such as the "F" word or fooling the censor with alternate like words will not be tolerated.

 

All members are encouraged to review the forum rules again, specifically as how they apply to swearing. It is a big no-no.

 

dont weld em....and try not to cuss... though i have no idea what you said, aviator is too efficient...

 

If your going to weld it, get a spare spider gear, lay it on top of the spiders gears, and weld the spare spider gear to the rest of them. Preheat the gears with a torch.

 

Aussie Locker works nice. Got one in my toy. Works beautiful.

 

i broke some welds with my 35's and a lil 110 volt welder. i will never run a welded diff again. hated it more then anything

 

i guess im on the other end of the boat i've had lunch box lockers and HATED their road manners...i put in a welded about 4 months ago and i love it....i'll deal with the tire chriping all day comparied to the lunch box banging and lruching...as for the weld....i work at a body shop and i had the guy that does all the frame repairs weld it up....it is 1 solid unit now
FYI: the frame guy at my work has been welding frames, sheetmetal,and suspension parts for about 20 yrs. now....i don't think his welds are going to break

 

x2. Barely notice it. You can provoke into lurching, but you would have to consciously try.

 

go welded....i have ran welded up for the past couple of months w/ a welded rear end w/ 36's...4 of my buddies have ran theirs for the past 3 years w/ 37's and 39's......if it is done right w/ good penetration you have nothing to worry about except runnin through tires(if it is DD) i drive mine to the trail every weekend and drive it to work about 2 times a week! and the best part...it was free!!!!
