Wow. Toyota needs some design help. Has anybody taken a diesel out of a hino to swap into a p/up or a runner? Maybe even one from a chevy/gmc/isuzu cabover? Or a peterbilt?? Damn, that would be sweet. When Im a millionaire one day, I'm gonna rig up a full size caterpillar diesel into the bed. And a huge electric motor under the hood. It'll be the first Tacobrid!!

That was posted almost a year ago (Jan. 08). Is it still confirmed? Last I heard, they decided not to bring over the diesel. But that was from a Toyota dealership, so who knows how credible that is.

According to a reputable source, the diesel project was canceled. The entire drivetrain would need beefing up to handle the Hino V-8TT and would've made it too expensive. The death blow was the fuel price spike that took diesel over $5.

Well, Isuzu and Toyota have been in the talks for a diesel Toyota for the last few months since Toyota bought GM's shares in Isuzu. The Toyota will use the Isuzu D-Max diesel to meet emissions.

Having read the article linked it seems that the engine will definitely not be the Hino 8L but a new smaller engine timed for the 2010 redesign of the tundra model. Here's hoping they offer a MT option.

D-max, as in the 6.6L were all familiar with? Awesome engine byfar, but what happens to GM heavy duties? Surely Toyota and GM aren't using the same engine?

Toyota diesel trucks have been "confirmed" for the past 10 years. Every year they say "coming soon"

I won't bet on seeing a Toyota diesel truck anytime in the near future (as in the next few years).
Actually Toyota is cutting back on their "full sized" truck production and I don't expect to see that turn around any time soon either.
One of the hugest blunders that Toyota ever did was get into the "full sized" truck market.

Bob McCurry's legacy.

To keep at least one shift at the San Antonio Tundra/Sequoia plant running, Tundra will be exported to the Middle East, Central and South America.

That may be for this instant in time however don't be surprised to see that plant converted also to make something else.
This is a global recession and these simply aren't selling anywhere, on top of the fact that most of the other, non-US, consumers aren't a nearsighted as we are here, especially since their fuel cost are even higher (except in countries where the government subsidizes the fuel cost).
Look at GM. They're moments away from bankruptcy and they, like Toyota, have a huge global market. GM and Toyota, as well as Ford, are really having a horrid time. Nothing "large" is selling anywhere and I don't expect to see that change any time soon.

It's being converted as we type. The difference between GM and Toyota are many, including planning, cash on hand, long-term debt and legacy costs. Toyota has never had, and has no plans for layoffs anywhere in North America. That's not to say dealer lots and the ports aren't overflowing with product, they are. If anyone absolutely needs a new Toyota anything, between now and year-end is the time to buy.

That's true, especially the legacy cost, however remember that Japan's in a horrid recession and Toyota's really lowed their forward guidance.

Agreed. Toyota's short-term outlook makes me want to sell the house, buy a blue water sailboat and head to Tahiti.
