Truck bed seating?

Has anyone mounted seats right behind the cab in the bed of the truck? I have the stock seat from my pickup and I'm thinking of making some mounts for the back. And i know for the most part it is legal to do this. Just wondering if you guys had some input or ideas.

I'd call the local jail 1st and ask if it has hi-speed internet...

Then I'd make sure you get supplemental liability insurance... B/c the 1st time you kill somebody that was riding back there, your insurance WILL NOT COVER IT, and you will be sued for the full amount plus whatever the judge feels.

With today's medical profits... ohh, sorry, cost... I'd say 2 Mill should cover it. Lloyd's of London WILL write the policy.

if you had a roll bar what would be the difference between this and a 4runner w/o a top?

Crash tested and approved by the NTSB?

I know I won't ride with you with a seat bolted to a sheet metal floor...

And it can equally go backwards as it can forwards... All you need is to be stopped and get hit from behind from something big and fast enough...

Let me put it to you like this:

Toyota built it, tested it and sold it to you. If anything happens that Toyota is responsible for, Toyota is at fault.

Now if Toyota builds something and you go modify it, is Toyota now liable for something you modified?

We live in america, come on... You goof up and I don't care what Billy said, or what Billies parents told you about him riding in the back... Or what you told Billy about riding in the back...

YOU WILL get sued.

I'm pretty sure it's legal for me to bolt a snow cone machine in the back of my truck too... But if some kid gets strep from contaminated water and dies from a bad snow cone... That's another liability policy...

You can go bolt a Lazy Boy to it for all I care... But I'd make damn sure nobody was riding it it while the vehicle was in motion...

Now x the field where the creek turns back by the old stump road, sitting at the swimming hole... who cares? Vehicle in motion and a wreck, persons injured and you will get sued...

Is the bed considered a "passenger compartment"? You can legally bolt a tool box on the back of your truck too...

If you can find the rear bed seats out of an old Subaru Brat, install approved seat belts, install a real Rollbar in the truck bed and mount all mounts and connections to the truck's frame you should be okay. I had this type of system mounted in my 1981 Toyota truck and never had any problems either with state inspection or my insurance carrier.

Hold the phone there nervous nelly....

1. No seats bolted to a sheet metal floor for you? Better crawl under your rig real quick and update your post.

All you need under the bed is a wide washer reinforcing the metal bed....kinda just like what's under the front seats of the truck.

2. With all your "backwards and forwards" talk, you're making folks dizzy, but I think you are describing crush zones.

Newer vehicles do have crush zones but the older pickups are unlikely to. Install a roll bar and it looks miraculously like the 4runner....even bolted to the sheet metal bed.

To the OP, when you bolt the seat in your bed, if it front facing I would recommend a roll bar like the 4runner. That will at least give rear passengers a fighting chance in the even of a roll over. Make sure you install seat belts!

Good luck.

I was thinking of a rear facing seat, mounted right behind the cab. I'd be putting this on my rig that I use for mudding, so a rollover would be very unlikely (at least how I see it) but I and my passengers for that matter would probably appreciate extra protection

I checked that out a little earlier, looks a little too fancy for my needs lol

What does sheet metal have to do with a formed brace with a nut welded to the back of it again? I'll take my chances with the formed brace...

Off highway, you're right, he can do anything he wants...

And I wouldn't put a roll bar where a head can hit it... Watch any off road vid where a 4WD rocks back and forth... Watch the heads of the passengers...

Hit some ruts off-camber and you'll see what I'm talking about... Put it further back... And it also won't be a hand grab/ digit remover in a roll...

In washington, it's not illegal to ride in the bed of a truck on the highway.
However, it is illegal to not have a proper passenger securing system. So i'm assuming that means if you can bolt a seat down, with seatbelts, you'll be good to go.

i too wish to do that, i live in vancouver bc. my dad did that to a old ford we had when i was 12 (Mid 90s) he found a bench seat by side of road and welded it to the frame. it was a lot of fun riding in back and the idea of splitting a gas bill 4 ways sounds even sweeter.

no way could i afford that seat system though, my upcoming truck purchase budget is only 3k and that seat system is a grand by itself.

im thinking ill go down to pick a part and pull some yahoos 4point racing seats.
there stupidity is my gain!
get my dad or my cousin to show me how to weld it up.

With my truck i'm squeezing an old van seat in the bed for when i go camping up north.
Gonna have to take out the lightbar to do it, though.

just a thought... could you replace the entire body with a body from a 4runner around the same year?

Same in OR. Don't know about the seat/belt requirements, never been pestered about them. This ain't NY or CA, we still can make some choices. Even bad ones.

(Not a slam on members from those states)

Its not illegal to ride in the bed in washington.

"Washington does not have a law that prevents persons from riding in pickup beds. However, the seat belt law does require that all passenger positions with safety belts be utilized. Example: If there are five seating positions in the pickup and there are only two adults in the passenger compartment but three other persons in the pickup bed, the driver (depending on the age of the persons in the pickup bed) could be issued a Notice of Infraction."

And this on tells you what states have restrictions on riding in the back.

Interesting stuff. Never had kids in the back of mine, but I did it as a kid, all the time. But I also rode my bike without a helmet, so maybe I'm just....dangerous!
