Tranmission rebuild advice needed.
Tranmission rebuild adice needed.
Specs:
4Runner 2001 SR5
2WD V6 3.4L
Miles: 110K
I took the 4runner to AAMCO they said it was a tranny problem. They gave me a qoute for a rebuild roughly $1700 for a tranny rebuild and if the torque converter needs work $300 on top. Possible a $2000 cost.
I heard from a small shop roughly $1400 no more than that.
Both shops will give me 1 year warranty. I need advice. =)
It seems like a quality vs price thing but I'm not sure first time I had a problem with my 4runner.
If you're interested there are details of what happened before the diagnosis: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f120/tranmission-problem-irvine-oc-112438/

I'd think if it were truly a trans problem you'd hear noises and feel some bad stuff going on in the trans.
If it did turn out to be a trans, I'd just do it myself and buy a junkyard trans for $300.

I read your other thread, and combining the info contained in that one with the info in this one, there's no way that would even make me consider replacing the transmission for $2000. Has anybody actually opened up the transmission or even drained and analyzed the fluid before giving you this diagnosis? Have they checked for any tranny codes stored in the ECU? Get an estimate from a different shop (tranny shop) that doesn't mind doing some troubleshooting, get them a printout of the tranny repair and troubleshooting manual, and go from there. At the very least, drop the tranny pan, remove the valve body, and test all the solenoids. Any decent shop should be able to do that in 2 hours, and may end up finding the problem right away.
