Tire sizing confusion

Tire pricing confusion
It's time for new sneakers...
I'll be getting the BFG M/T:
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/fin...FSUV&tc=MTAVM5
What's with the wild arse pricing? Discount Tire is showing:
So, why is going with a metric sized 305/70/16 is $50 more per tire than a straight sized 33x12.5x16.5?
Can I run the 16.5" tire on my 16" rim?

So, I'm forced into paying the premium for a metric sized tire... and what's the pricing difference about?
ARGH. My $1000 tires just went to $1200. I'm not thrilled.

The final mounted & balanced price from Discount is $1238. Going with TireRack and a local installer is about $1000.
I'm gonna have to talk to Discount in person to figure this out... sigh.
Thanks guys.

Aside from the fact thats its a big no-no.... you dont want 16.5's, they dont hold a bead for ˟˟˟˟˟, this is the main reason HMMVW rims are bead locked inner and outer...
get the 285's, little narrower but same height... less rubby rubb rubb...and $24 less a tire, thats close enough to say 100 bucks less...

If you're set on the BFG MT's, check tires-easy.com ...$217 per tire
If not, use that site to get a price quote on the Firestone Destination MT's ...from what i've seen, they work great and $164 a piece doesn't break the bank ($770 installed w tax from local Firestone shop)

OkieDoke... I promise, no trying to talk someone into mounting a 16.5" tire on my 16" rims.
dang it. I was thinking $1000, so now I'm at almost $1250 unless I go the TireRack route.
Has anyone yused TireRack and a local installer, or am I missing a vendor that I should be looking into? There's a 4WheelParts place about 5 miles from here, but they're at DiscountTire prices.
Thank you!

I really like my BFG Muds!! and reccommend them. But do what I did, get them on e-bay. I got 5 for the price of 4. They were used for about 100 miles, some jeep guy had them and didn't like that they rubbed. I think in the end I was 800 bucks into 5 35's. But then again rubber has about doubled in the last year.. I just priced 4 265/70/17 BFG AT's for 195 ea at costco....

eBay's a good idea... but there's nothing up there at the moment.
I don't have a "ton" of time to wait at this point. This is what I'm looking at on my rear axle: (click for larger pic)

It may be hard to tell but the outside 2" of the tire is smooth. The crescent shaped patterns there are what I'm assuming to be tread warning marks.
The story there is that the rear tires used to be up front, which is where they got that bad. That was "just a slight" camber issue which happened after I installed spacers above my SAWs and did NOT get an alignment for "quite some time".
Yeah, I know. And yeah, I'm paying for it now.

Well, I pulled the trigger.
$931 from TireRack.com for a set of 305/70-R16 BFG M/Ts. TireRack ships to a local shop for installation and balancing. (the install will be another $100 or so)
I dropped in on the "target" shop today and talked to the owner, I wanted to make sure that they felt good about deals like this. I told him straight out that I was concerned about him getting a big enough slice of the pie to make it worth his while. He said he was happy to do it and that Tire Rack is a good company to work with.
We'll see!
If they ship today, they'll probably be on next Tuesday.

For an instant I had a thought about trying to find someone to mount 33/12.5/16.5's on my 16" rims, but (again, see above) that's just SUCH a bad idea.
I don't get it... but EVERYONE is like this. The TireRack price plus shipping actually puts me UNDER what I was going to pay for 33/12.5/16.5's.

The shop was clean, he had cars on both of his racks, and he's got a Hunter. Balancing is lifetime from him as well, and he's dealt with Tire Rack a lot which can help if I have to take BFG up on their warranty.

good call on the 305's. what wheels will you be running? 16x8's w/4.5" of Backspacing I hope!
285's are about 11-11.2" wide and they're a stretch to run them on the stock 16x7's. 305's are 12-12.2" wide. you need a 16x8 with a MINIMUM of 4.5" of backspacing to run them at all, and you'll still need to pound the pinch weld to get them to work. even then, they'll lightly kiss the upper A-arm on a full droop and kiss the frame on a full crank of the steering wheel w/ the tire stuffed.
