T-Case Brake

How many people are using T-case brakes, and where did you get them?

I'm looking to get one for 3 reasons:
1: I don't currently have an e-brake on my truck, and need one.
2: a t-case brake seems to be about the same cost as getting new cables from Toyota
3: I plan to do a rear disc swap in the near future, so will need one then anyways.

I've seen Allpro's t-case brake, and Sky Manufacturings. But are there any other options out there?

Unless your rear is locked I don't think a T-case brake is a very good replacement for e-brakes, especially if you live in hilly country.

Wouldnt one tire have to spin fwd and one backword for this to fail?

I understand what you are saying, but I dont think it would be an issue...

Well, I ordered an Allpro brake last night, pretty good shipping rate considering it's UPS and across the border.

I guess its time to get my ass moving on my tranny swap so I can actually use it when it gets here. stupid automatic

this is the closest you'll get for a 3rd gen 4Runner:

http://ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43900

it will take some customizing though because the parking brake in 4Runners come out of the body behind the transfer case...

Could you not fab a mount to attach the brake to the nose of the rear diff? would this not give you usable E-brake again? I've seen some pretty small ones that would not affect the ground clearance to much...

Not really "new", but something I guess.

I got the brake installed, and aside from needing to fiddle with some cable routings(my ebrake cable it WAY to long to use as is). It was a pretty easy instal.

I've been rebuilding my engine...a couple times because bad stuff has happened. I havn't gotten a chance to drive with it yet, but I can tell you that it will certainly hold the crank in place. I've found I can get the same effect by applying the t-case brake as I get having the t-case in 4-Hi and the tranny in 5th.

I'm happy with it thus far...as for the $67 UPS charged me in brokerage...that's another story.

Does the All pro kit come with everything you need? Does any one have a write up on the install, or does it come with detailed instructions?

This isnt the only solution for ebrake on a rear disc swap. I beleive Sky sells a kit that uses Chevy rear calipers and rotors that have an ebrake integrated.

Yeah, I looked at that too. You can use Cadillac ElDorado calipers or Ford tarus calipers, both have integrated e-brakes, but both are really expensive and I've heard the caddy calipers are a PITA to work on/with. If you wanted to go to a full floating axle, you could also use a set up with the internal drum style parking brake like the Supra or FJ crusier use. FROR's full floater kit has that as an option.

I want to do a disc swap that's as simple as possible, and this works so I'm happy.

As for a line lock: NOT good as an ebrake. They work great for temporary stops, but can loose pressure and thus release your brakes. Plus in Canada you have to have an e-brake that can be operated independantly of the cars regular braking system.

And on the instal: it come with directions(as good as you need), and it's pretty straight forward: pop off the drive shaft and flange, bolt the disc on. Then pull some bolts from your t-case, line up the caliper and replace with longer bolts. The only tricky part is hooking up the ebrake cable. Mine too a bit of rerouting to get to work properly.

Yes it would. Even then they would move at different speeds which would cause the d-shaft to spin, so the tcase brake would prevent that.
