Supercharged 95 Runner

Hey,
Odd topic I know but after some research I’m still confused on what fuel mods to install.
I’ve recently purchased a new supercharger for my 1995 4Runner . I’ve changed out the 3.0 with a 3.4 from a 96 4Runner. Currently I’m using the ECU from the 96 and I’m not sure if this can handle the fuel needs of the supercharger. I would like to upgrade to a 97 ECU as I have heard this will work .

I’ve been looking into fuel mods from URD and this is the route I think I will go with . However the URD kit for my application comes with the PCU and built in O2 sensor signal conditioner.

Would I be better off buying the FTC-E and what advantages does the controller have that the PCU doesn’t have?

Here are some pics of my truck .

Nice looking truck, was wondering if the tires on there were the Terragrapplers, look like them, and that's what I was thinking about going with next. Also, what size do you have on there? Looking good!

i am aware that there are many s/c 4runners here. one of the points of his question was the 96 ECU compared to others. mark and christian were the ones that came to mind first.

Oh now boys... stop fighting over me!

So Tragic... what'd you end up doing for fuel mods? (and beware, that's a loaded question!)

Mods will be going on after I get back from vacation (first week of May). So far It looks like the URD kit is going on my truck.

I heard my name!

Nice rig man! Another option is to save yourself $500 and go with the SMT 6 set up. Here is what I run:

SMT 6 with significantly retarded timing in the 2K to 3K RPM "ping" range
Walbro 190 fuel pump
2-step colder plugs
NAPA 170 thermostat
Redline water wetter with 60/40 (water to coolant) ratio

This is simply another option. It eliminated the audible ping for me and gave me complete tuning control.

Johnny at sea2sky tuning would probably be your best bet for the SMT if you are interested.

Definitely upgrade that fuel pump, especially if you are still running the pump that was on the 3.0, which I think flows much less than even the 3.4 pump.

Holy big filter batman!! Thats almost as big as the one I have on my 7.3L!

Do you know what altitude you are at? When I S/Cd mine it ran fine as is at sea level, but once I started hitting the hills it was down hill from there and the pinging would get quite worse the higher I went (go to school on the coast, parents live in the mountains). So if you are pretty close to sea level and you don't hear any pinging, you should be O-K for now. I'd definitely at least get a bigger fuel pump in there until you are ready to pull the trigger on the rest for safe measure

Lets see some video of you driving it now!!

Thanks, for the replys and suggestions.

An Email to URD confirmed that the Fuel management controller in the kit is the same as the FTC-E.
I've driven the truck on a couple occasions when the weather is cool and I haven't heard any pre-detonation. However after everything I have read about these motors I know the Factory ECU is running this motor lean. On the few times I have gotten on the "go fast pedal" I can smell the exhaust cooking (high egt) is my guess.

I'm looking forward to the fuel mods and tuning this motor to see what it can really do.

Turbodale, Great video of your Runner Once I get my fuel mangement under control video will follow.

Thanks

Well, sort of. The ECU runs a pretty advanced timing map for this motor in N/A form; bolt on a SC'r, and it just doesn't know what to do with itself. Also, don't forget the problem of the stock fuel pump's inability to keep up with WOT demand - it's a huge problem with a relatively cheap and easy fix.

...and the stock injector's lack of ability to deliver the fuel that the pump can push.

Man, this is the first time I saw Turboale's vid. WHEW!!!

From what I've seen on this board, many s/c'd trucks are either stock height or lowered a bit (I know there are those that are lifted but I don't think as many.). How scary was it to go that fast w/ a lifted 4runner? I get more body roll from the slightly higher rear springs and even w/ Addcos, I am not super comfortable going that fast on a highway w/ twists...

THAT SHIFT! OMG! AUSTIN, GET THAT FIXED!

Mine used to shift like that... worse in fact. Dude, it's only gonna get worse.

Come ride with me.

I pulled the sway bar off when I put the new tranny in last week and haven't put it back yet. I don't think I will. I've been up to 90+ a couple of times since - it's interesting, but controllable. 2 1/2" lift, no sway bar, camber's 5+ degrees off.
