Sticky, nasty mess!

Well, I discovered that my rear outer axle seal has gone out thus filling my passenger side drum with gear oil. Anyone have any advice on what to clean the shoes with? All the hard parts I can use any general degreaser or even gasoline if I needed, but I don't want to degrade the shoes with the wrong chemical. They still have good life left in them, so I hate to toss them and buy new ones... Any advice would be great. Thanks guys!

Jay

Mine did the same thing last summer. Unfortunately the shoes were beyond saving (in my opinion) so I went ahead and bought new ones. It's a little bit of money, but I didn't have the constant 'what if' floating around in the back of my head either. I don't like the 'what if'....especially when it comes to whether I'll be able to stop or not.

Sparks, that's what I figured, but thought I'd ask to see if anyone has tried it and survived, haha...

I'm sure it would, but I'm wondering if the gear oil has, in some way, damaged the shoes and if the cleaning process would make it worse...

Best to just replace. Ive never seen soaked shoes work worth a crap even after brake clean or solvents were used.

New shoes.
Gear oil will soak in and cleaning the surface does nothing, As soon as there is pressure on the shoe more will squish out and back to square one.

Thanks guys, pretty much what I was figuring, but thought I'd ask. I appreciate the help.
