SR5 Chrome trim needs to go! help with painting

I have a black 3rd gen 4runner, however it has the chrome bumpers and some chrome on my running dash. im on a cheap budget and i just want to sand it down , prime, and paint. I have a drill tool and was wondering what material brush i should buy to scuff up the chrome. any pics of all black 4runners would be nice! i wanna see how it would look, i like the all black on the 3rd gen limited 4runners.

1:when sanding the bumpers, how scuffed up should i get it?

2:after sanding i apply primer, but, what type of primer do u guys recommend spraying on chrome???

3:how many coats of the black should i spray, then how many gloss coats should i spray?

--thanks guy, also if u have any de-chroming tutorials to post i would appriciate it, such as matierals, time spent and so forth

i will be posting before, during and after pics when i finally start this project.

here is my truck with the ugly chrome:

I have a 92 4runner but, I dechromed my rear bumper. I dont have a picture of it, but basically the prep goes as is... Wash, sand, wash sand, primer however many coats you want, and then coat it with what paint you want. I'd recommend letting the bumper sit an entire day and give it a chance to cure before putting another coat on. and it'll come out great.

haha yeah, my bad. should be sand, wash, sand, wash. I didn't wet sand my bumper what so ever. I'm not sure how many cans I used. maybe 2? I put 3 coats of paint on mine. but its starting to chip on the side panels of the bumper. I didn't have mud flaps on for a couple days and, yeah. I also went wheeling with it and scrapped it on the ground... it removed all the paint that was on it, including the primer... so just take your time. be patient with it. I wasn't and it didn't turn out very durable. If you have a heat gun to kinda "bake" it all on there that'll be great too.

I've had good results with the SEM satin trim paint. When I was blacking out some chrome it seemed to be the most recommended product so I went with it.

Yea that won't last long at all, especially on a front bumper. There is not a lot that will stick to crome for very long...Try sanding it with 180 grit on a orbital sander and go to the paint store and get some black epoxy primer, it will stick to most anything. The epoxy has a glossy sheen. That would do it all in one, but of course if you wanted less gloss you could then scuff it a lil and put a semi gloss or flat spray paint on it. The epoxy will overspray real bad so i suggest you cover the rest of the truck with some plastic or a tarp.

Are you wanting flat or gloss black results? Get a sanding sponge (they can be cleaned and reused). It allows you to get into all the little crevices and hard-to-reach spots. Use etching primer, a couple coats of a quality base paint, and a good clearcoat. Note: The clearcoat will really determine the end result. For example, if you use flat black base but go with a gloss clear, you'll have a more glossy end result. If you want flat, use a flat clearcoat with flat base. If you want in between, use satin black with flat clear.

I can get pretty much any combo for you. So let me know if there's anything I can do to help. No matter what, get a good respirator. Sanding chrome sends some lung-tearing particles into the air and I don't know about you, but I don't want that crud in my system.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Cool! So if you're looking for gloss, go with a black semi-gloss base and a gloss clear. I think the biggest issue I see (and I've done myself) is rush the process. You know, you really want it done and don't want to wait, so you cake it on a bit more than you should...so if there's anything I can say it's take your time during prep and application. Go for light coats and just be patient. If you're in a part of the country that has cooler temps right now, heat up the surface in your garage with a hairdryer or similar before painting.

I'm looking forward to seeing how your rig turns out!

Sorry for the late post. I ordered it online. Can't remember where I got it from but it's pretty easy to find (at least on line - not sure about local).
