Got the second issue as well. It *feels* like a big step up (IMHO) from the first one (which I also liked!). Cover to cover from the second I got it. Off the top of my head, I can't say exactly what it was about it that feels better, but hey...

This one felt a little more "achievable" to me; aside from Ivan's rig, there wasn't as much in there that made me say "no bloody way could I ever do that..."

And the educational tidbits in this one were pretty darn cool. Me like!

OMG, just got the new issue. This is one AWESOME peice and it feels like it was aimed directly at me, as I want to build up my 4R to kinda be an expedition/long haul sort of vehicle like the "Mammouth Mountain Monster" FZJ80. The Ivan Stewart thing, was informative, WATRD's truck WHAT A BEAUTY, engine swaps. Man, can I say enough about the great quality of this magazine, it's amazing, best $20 ever spent on my part

I got mine too, and I love it.

BUT, The history lesson SUCKS! Don't get me wrong, it's not all bad. It finally opened my eyes to the land cruisers (never seen an FJ45 and was never sure what made an FJ62 different from an FJ60).

BUt there are a couple things that are way off. They just ignored the 84-88 pickup. They put 84 and 85 under the previous generation and 86-88 under the next generation. That is a big part of yota history just to lump together with something else.

The whole description of the 2nd gen runner is messed up. "two door model deleted in 1993. The three-door is available with 4wd only" What the hell are they talking about?

The other thing I didn't get was the star rating for everyday usibility. What the hell? I have a friend that drives an FJ40 everyday adn I used my 4runner everyday, How can these only get 4 stars? Just seems like a stupid thing to grade.

It's not that bad of mistakes, I would just expect more from a "Toyota-only" magazine. Seems like pretty basic stuff.

Otherwise the magazine is awesome.

Arrow 2007 FJ Cruiser news coming soon!

Hello from 4WD Toyota Owner magazine!

It’s mid-December and we’ve had a great couple of months. 4WD Toyota
Owner and its editors have been to Surf N Turf, we’ve been to Palm
Springs, we’ve gone to desert races to see Tacomas win championships, we’ve
been out on the Dusy Ershim trail, and more. But one thing stands out…

I’m stoked to let you all know about a very cool announcement. First
and foremost, the upcoming Jan/Feb 2006 issue of 4WD Toyota Owner will
have EXCLUSIVE photos and drive reports on the 2007 FJ Cruiser that you
simply won’t find anywhere else. That’s correct, EXCLUSIVE photos and
editorial that gives a true, from-the-driver’s-seat account of how this
groundbreaking new machine performs off-road, including on the Rubicon
Trail. Not a passenger, not a view, but from DRIVERS. We will have not
one, not two, but FOUR different drive accounts. Both Senior Editor Ben
Crockett and myself have driven the FJ Cruiser, and the other two?
Well, suffice to say, they are DEEPLY involved with the FJ Cruiser in every
way. Yes, that’s a teaser, but there is an embargo on revealing details
about the FJ Cruiser and we can’t break it.

Photos? Glad you asked. We have photos not available ANYWHERE else of
the FJ Cruiser wheeling on the Rubicon, in the desert, in California on
the Rubicon, all over the place. More importantly, our photos will
truly illustrate the off-road capabilities of the 2007 FJ Cruiser. We don’t
mean the two pics we have on our website (themselves an exclusive scoop
when we got them), nor the ones on Toyota’s website—these are all new
and unpublished!

You’ve probably seen the cool piece of schwag that was given away at
several events for the FJ Cruiser. It consists of a unique, green nylon
bag embroidered with the “FJ Cruiser” logo. Inside that bag (itself a
cool item) are a ton of great goodies. There’s a brand-new FJ Cruiser
T-shirt, FJ Cruiser beanie cap, a smaller tote bag, and the collectible
“VIP Entry Pass” for the Ojai press intro inside the main bag. This bag
is tough enough to hold straps, chains, or tools. The rest of the gear
is equally cool.

You could only get one of these if you attended an invitation-only
Toyota event. Heck, some have already been seen on eBay going for almost
$200! But we are giving ours away to you, our readers! Anyone who has
already subscribed, or subscribes by January 1st, 2007, will be entered to
win this ultra-rare and extremely collectible collection of FJ Cruiser
items. To see the gear, click on the link below.

Please note: if you subscribe after December 20 you will not receive
the Jan/Feb 2006 issue with all the killer FJ Cruiser coverage, as that
is the cutoff date for subscribing and receiving that issue, and you
will have to purchase one separately. Of course, if you subscribe after
Dec 20 and by January 1 you will be entered, but your first issue will be
the March/April 2006 issue of 4WD Toyota Owner.

The new FJ Cruiser has been generating a ton of buzz since it was
announced. Don’t wait and end up missing the Jan/Feb issue of 4WD Toyota
Owner which will have this feature article!

To subscribe, (and to see the winnable FJ Cruiser schwag!) go to our
website at: http://www.4wdtoyotaowner.com. Or, send a check or money
order for $19.95 to: 4WD Toyota Owner, #102, 8750 Mary Ave NW, Seattle, WA
98117.

Good luck! And make sure you subscribe in time so you can see photos
and coverage that NO OTHER MAGAZINE will have. The 2007 FJ Cruiser is an
awesome machine, and you’ll learn all about it in the Jan/Feb issue of
4WD Toyota Owner, shipping soon!

Thanks and see you on the trails,

Dave

"The whole description of the 2nd gen runner is messed up. "two door model deleted in 1993. The three-door is available with 4wd only" What the hell are they talking about?"

There was a 2 door, 2nd gen 4Runner from 08/89 to 07/92. I had one. It was not very popular and was therefore discontinued in the 93 and up production. At the same time, they must have decided that those would be 4wd only; it must have been temporary because the 96's offered 2wd versions.. I had never heard the "4wd only" part in 93 to 95's...

More good news...

The Jan/Feb issue has shipped and should be arriving in mailboxes
nationwide soon. Be warned, however, that it can take up to four weeks, as
the magazine bulk rate can be pretty inconsistent. Be patient; it's on
the way!

The cover and main feature is on the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. We
published over ten pages on this amazing new vehicle, with four drive reports
and 23 full color photos. We got Joe Bacal, Toyota's offroad test
driver, to write a report on his journey in the FJ Cruiser across the
Rubicon Trail. Now that's the kind of story you want to read! Everything from
the crawl ratios to the Garmin navigation system are detailed--it's
awesome. You won't find a better feature on this machine in any other
magazine.

Overall, we think it's a cool 4WD Toyota. There is no solid front axle,
but that's hardly surprising. The manual tranny has better crawl ratios
than the automatic. One of our main pet peeves is the huge B-pillar,
which kills a lot of the rear-seat passenger's views, and makes for a big
blind spot for the driver. On the good side, this thing can wheel! The
photos of it doing the Con should prove that. Plus, our editors drove
it in the sand and desert wastes near Palm Springs, and it came out a
winner. It'll be fun to get one of these and Project it out--lift,
bumper, etc. Which reminds us, over 60 companies at last count have signed on
to make aftermarket parts for the FJ Cruiser, so you can expect to see
lots of goodies for this rig.

Price for base models looks to be as follows:

4x4 AT $23,300
4x4 MT $22,890
4x2 AT $21,710

You can see the Table of Contents for this and our other issues here:

http://www.4wdtoyotaowner.com/TOC.html

*On a final note, the US Postal Service is raising prices on January 8,
so now is the time to get back issues before prices go up. See them
here:
http://www.4wdtoyotaowner.com/extracopies.html

Thanks to everyone--EVERY ONE OF YOU!--who has helped make 4WD Toyota
Owner a success. Please keep emailing us with your questions, comments
and suggestions. Happy New Year and a good 2006 to you!
