Shock Stiffness

Hey guys!

So this is going to be my first time changing shocks, and struts ive been told... lol

My question is... is there a difference in shocks??
Like do they come in different stiffness for different types of vehicles??
example.. like stiffer ones for sports car or softer looser one for offroading?

I have a 2001 4Runner. I DO NOT go off roading. But i do go through very crappy streets everyday.... If there is different types of shocks, which should i go for??

Thanks for your knowledge and help guys!

I just installed Monroe sensatrac because lots of good reviews here on yt, they feel a bit stiff, but I was use to riding around in 20 plus year old worn out shocks. They improve the ride on the road, no dirt yet though.
