Ok, It's been a while since i've posted (summer is over, school is started, and it puts a damper on my wheeling habbit).

Anyways, I've been driving around town a lot lately, and I hate the feel of my shift knob (5 Speed shift knob). The leather is starting to peel off, and I want something that gives me more tactile feedback (hard, not soft). I have put my 4wd selection knob on the main shaft, and I like the feel of that better than the "plush" leather one.

My question is, do they make shift knobs that thread on to the stock threads? I can't find a good way of finding which knobs will do this. Otherwise, any reccomendations (even if they don't thread on, eg a set screw).

I realize this isn't a ricer forum, so most people don't care what their shift knob looks like, but the stock one needs to go.

Check these knobs out. They should fit the toyota threds. Plus the gray one matched my gray runner. If you select toyota truck on the drop down menu you should get a knob with the toyota shift pattern and toyota threds

Well, I think I'm going to eventually get an aluminum knob (probably black) for now, I'm using the 4WD knob, which I really like.

 

Having tried a couple metal knobs, I must say they are not comfortable on the hand. They feel very cold, or very hot. The metal will suck a tremendous amount of heat from your hand, if it is a cool day. If you like to drive with your hand resting on the shifter, you will not like a metal knob. Buy a cheep metal knob, and try it for a week.

Take your knob off, take it into the hardware store, and determine which thread it is, by trying a few metric bolts (M12x1.25 - M8x1.25). Purchase a long bolt that fits, and use it to help track down a favorite shift knob that will thread onto your shift stick.

I ended up with a large black plastic knob, from a John Deere tractor, and a thread adapter(1/2" course to M8x1.25, i have a 2004 with an automatic).

 

not gonna lie.. I got a $9 Dice Shift knob from Kragen as a joke.. and 3 years later its definately the one thing that everyone compliments. I actually like the hard cubic feel.. and the ladies get a kick out of it.

on my green 510 is a 6 ball, and the red 510 has a 3 ball, color coordinated

 

check out MOMO. I have an Evolution carbon fiber. Carbon/aluminum, a little cold in the morning but feels great otherwise.

 

The factory (blah) shift knob. Not very Sporty, for a Sport 4Runner.


The factory Lexus RS300 looks good, if you like chrome.
It also feels good, without freezing or burning your hand.






My favorite is the industrial knob. This is a knob sold by John Deere;
but it is just a standard industrial knob with a 1/2" coarse thread.


All you need is this threaded insert, to adapt it to your
4th Gen Automatic Toyota. Get the threaded insert at
a screw supply store (e.g. Tacoma Screw).
The knob was $10, and the insert was $2.50.

 

Does the Momo shift knob have actual threads that match the Toyota stick, or is it one of those plastic adapters that you force onto the stick?

Those "rock" shift knobs are cool. And there are not two alike. :-)

 

Its not really comfortable but I think its sweet looking. Its from an old lawn mower.
