Running new Power Steering lines

I started removing stuff from my engine compartment last night to get some more room to work, and I notcied a gigantic whack of lines.

The engine is a 22RTE, so the power steering pump is about 10"(straight line) away from the power steering box. However, I have about 3' of tubing to go from the pump to the box.

The attached pic is pretty much what the tube routing looks like. And that much tubing is going to make it difficult for me to run an intercooler though there.

So I guess the question is: is that much tubing needed for some reason? And does powersteering line need to be hard line, or could I get some other flexable line to make the routing easier/less complicated.

Extra hard line is sometimes used to cool the fluid. Also keep in mind that the PS pump moves relative to the steering box (when ever the engine moves).

the hard line from the steering box that comes to the front of the truck and under the radiator is the cooling line (it should be the hard red one in your picture). The other one I am not to sure about without seeing why it was run there but it may be what Dale said about movement - may also be that they want to keep it away from the heat of the exhaust or the turbo.

I figured it might have something to do with cooling(the one in front anyways), but still...yikes that alot of plumbing. Ah well, one more thing to sort-out on this truck.
