porter cabel sander/polisher
ok, i am becoming really interested on learning how to detail the exterior of my vehicle. i have done some searching and have noticed that the porter cable 7336 (or something like that) is recomended alot. i looked it up and saw that it was like $120 new, that seems a bit much to me. so i was wondering if i could use the one that is smaller and fits in your hand (333k)? it is alot cheaper and it is a random orbit just like the 7336. if someone could let me know that would be great. thanks.

Stick with the 7335 or 7336 model.
Those are the two best PC units out.
Info I put together a few years back on how to use it.

thanks, maybe ill find a $120 dollars laying around some where. oh, one more thing. my runner is black and have done some research to try to find out if it is very easy to mess up with a sander/polisher, because i dont want to do that. i have read that most people with darker color vehicles recommend zanio products instead of griots, so i am guess i should go with zanio and just use the sander only when i am claying and do the rest by hand? any help or reccommendations would be great. thanks.

zanio is very good stuff.
No need to use a PC orbital with it though, it is done by hand.
Also the PC does not leave swirl marks.
You can also view a video of me pushing down real hard on my hood on my detail site.
I have about 3 vids in the wax section.

If you have a black car, you MUST own the Mr. Clean AutoDry car wash system.
Seriously - it's awesome. Works exactly like they say. I used it to wash my roomate's black AMG C32 and ML30 and he immediately went out and bought one!

I have read over on AutoTopia's detail forum some do use the PC with Zaino, it would be up to you.
But yes, the easiest way is to power clay with the PC.
Here I am
http://pnw4runners.com/tando/wax/1.mpg
It makes childs play out of claying your rig, and applies it much better than doing it by hand.
I have only used Griots clay too, and I like it as it is a huge chunk.
Others I have seen remind of those puny hotle/motel soaps.
The Griots one can be formed into the perfect hamburger patty to fit into the power clay holder that Griots carries.

I'll sell my (used twice) PC with 6" Plate from Griots for $95 shipped....
I'll even throw in the Griots Clay Holder.
Worked great on my black 97, no need to polish my salvage Anthracite 97.

Corey, i read your page, but i am still unsure on some things. do you use the PC on every step of detailing the outside of your rig (claying, polishing, and waxing). i know that you use the PC to apply the wax, but do you use it to remove it also. i want to learn how to do this myself so i dont have to take it some where to get it done when it needs it. the "professionals" that are working at places like that probrably have no idea what they are doing any way. if you want it done right do it yourself, right?

Hunt I just did my Black 97 this weekend and here is what and how I used it. Porter cable with griots clay bar holder although I did have to do some of the areas by hand. Then I used griots paint prep by hand you just spray it on and wipe off. Then I applied griots #3 polish with the porter cable in sections and then took it off by hand with some microfiber clothes. It comes off pretty easy. Then I applied the wax (I used S100) again with the machine and took it off by hand this came off very easy. My paint on the roof and hood are in pretty bad shape so next week I am going to use the #2 polish on those areas and then up to #3 and then wax.

polisher
I just went to Griot's last weekend and watched them use the new random/orbital they offer. They tested it on a dark grey Acura using all their steps. I already had their "best of show" wax and was doing it by hand. I bought their polishing kit which includes the new RO and came home and did my hood on my runner which is maroon and it came out AWESOME. It took out all the light scratches and any swirl marks I had. Its different then the older P.C. a little smaller and larger motor. Also comes with a lifetime war. and spare brushes(motor). It runs $130. Well worth the $. The key that I found out is to apply the wax and let it sit for at least 45min then take it off. Very Easy. The kit comes with instructional DVD.
