Painting shackles - what paint and what color?

I have 4 3/4" shackles. I'd like to paint them. What kind of paint would adhere best?

Also, what color would you paint them?

id say more or less any spray paint would as long as you do the proper prep work. maybe some automotive spraypaint for wheels or something. just be sure you strip all old paint and give it a good sanding, lay some primer (a couple light coats) then a couple light coats of paint until it looks nice and then seal it up with some clearcoat or something. shouldnt be too big of a deal

Do some Grabber Green. It is probably the most obnoxious color I have ever seen, and you'll probably get some attention. Just don't put it on your wheels like my friend did on his Subaru Legacy.

callmej75 (Loudins) powder coating. Spray paint will NOT hold up at all.

Here's mine he did for me a little while back:

Those look very good powdercoated Mike.

I agree, I have painted many a shackle red, it does not hold up.

I may have to send J about 5 shackles to get done.

5? How do you get an odd number? Only running springs on one side?

If you 'wheel, i wouldn't bother powder coating them, it'll just get scraped off anyways.

I say glow in the dark, so you can see all the rocks you hit! LOL

Put those on a plate, add a little barbeque sauce, they look good enough to eat.

Have you seen the tests J put his powdercoating through? He pc a little plate and then beat the mess out of it with somethin until it was all bent up and there wasn't a single chip or crack in the paint.

Ohhh - I had spring shackles on the brain.

Paint them some unique color so you can tell which ones are yours! When someone gets stuck and you're using various people's recovery gear, it's easy for them to get "misplaced".

Painting will work, but you gotta use rustoleum hammered paint and clearcoat it. Powdercoating is much tougher.

I tried that too on my rear hitch for the shackle.

Have a few cans left over from my 4Runner sliderz, plus clearcoat.
Still chipped.
I will repaint it though with the same paint.

How many coats? I did like 5 coats of paint and 3 coats of clear to my hitch on my old truck and it lasted and lasted.

Dupilcolour High Heat w/ Ceramic. Put coat ever 20min atleast 4 times. Once it tacs up put it in your oven on 150F for a couple hours. Tough....period. It's a shackel why spend a load of money on powder coating it. Powder coating cost as much as the shackel if not more. I just don't see the logic unless you run trails twice a season and you want to set the impression you offroad. I thought it's intended for use, not looks.

Cost of a 3/4 shackle is around 20 bucks. Now im no expert but I don't see anyway that powdercoating something that small is 20 bucks. If your gonna do it, why not just do it right the first time rather then recoating it over and over again with spraypaint.

Why be overly concerned with the looks of a shackel? It's intended for use not glamour. It would take a century for a shackel to rust before it reaches FOBAR. I see it as a complete waste of money. Use the shackel when needed, don't dangle it just to increase your parking lot wow factor and worry about a scratch. If anything a scratched shackel would make it look that much more wowzor. I see it as scrubbing your recovery strap with a toothbursh if you accidentally step on it when it tucked ever so neatly under your seat....wheres the logic.
