Need Opinions on Wheel Spacers: Rollover Protection?
Hey all,
I am going to be installing a 2" 4Crawler Body Lift soon and already have a 2.5" OME Suspension Lift. The tires I am running are a 265/75/R16. I am somewhat concerned about rollovers when highway driving and such. Basically I am looking for other's experience with wheel spacers. What kind they purchased and what they may know about rollover protection. I assume that if you widen your "tire stance" you help limit the chance of rollover (good idea since I am modifying the center of gravity on an SUV...I am also looking for opinions on the width of the spacer (1.25", 1.5", 2", etc.). Also, please don't criticize my BL. I am looking to run 285's for more ground clearance. This is the only way without a solid axle swap and higher suspension lift that I know of. Please don't bitch on this thread for the sake of trash talking BLs. Thanks!

Welcome to Yotatech. What year/model truck are we talking about here?
Spidertrax in Hygiene has some of the best spacers out there.
All that said:
- Spacing the wheels out will worsen the tire fitment issues
- An inch or so on each side isn't going to help much
On a side note, you can fit a taller tire if you keep it narrower. 255/85-16 will fit a lot easier than a 285 and give you the same ground clearance and traction.

i dont understand how wheel spacers have any more effect on wheel bearing lifetime than a wheel with less back spacing, they have the same end result(ie. stockers + spacers = wheels with less backspacing)
anyhow
on my nissan xterra i have a 3 suspension lift, i run 1.5" wheel spacers(makes for 3" extra out to out width) and it made a huge difference in the stability of the truck, it should have the exact same effects on a yota since the laws of physics do not care what make/model vehicle you are driving

First, I would only buy Spidertrax if I were you...I've heard horror stories about the offbrand ones and ebay ones...
Second, I installed a 2.5" lift and lost a LITTLE stability, and adding 3" to my width (1.5" spacers) helped a good amount it feels a lot better...
Third, body lifts look great! I would only recommend about 1.25" inch spacers
tc was right about tire fitment, but if thats not a problem for you, dont worry about it...

Uhm, I have 14" wide wheels, and I'll probably have to change wheel bearings every 100k-150k miles.... So 'bout the wearing issue on a 'yota, I wouldn't have so much worries.
Note, there are thousands of trucks in Iceland driving on 12"-18" wide wheels.
Bearings are not really *that* much of an issue.

Because the wider you go and the farther out, the bigger the arc is as the wheel turns. This leads to the tire wanting to get into the fender and bumper A LOT more. Even small changes in wheel backspacing or tire width has a HUGE effect on the fitment.

And I just think the tires start to look funny after you exceed 1.25"

Thanks for all of the input so far guys! I was wondering if anybody had an opinion about 1.25" spacers vs. 1.5" vs. 2". Input from ppl with a 3rd Gen
4Runner would be most appreciated. Also, I've been reading about steering vibrations at high speeds. Anybody know if this pertains to any specific brand of spacers which are not as good as others? Thanks!

I have 1.5" and they dont look too bad...
as far as the vibration, if you torque them up properly, and take the time to check them after the first 2 weeks and then once every couple of months, you prolly wont have to worry about it...mine never vibrates...
Ive mostly heard about vibrations and etc, from buying ebay spacers instead of brand name ones...i even saw some ebay ones that werent circles! they were like ovals or something and deformed...
just get some good ones, use the loc-tite, torque them properly, and DO NOT let a shop install them! they will just use an impact and not torque them!
