Import/Reman Engine Suggestions

I just bought a 99 4Runner with a busted 5VZ-FE and am looking to get either a low mileage import or a quality rebuilt.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to which companies have a good reputation and which ones should be avoided?

The remans vary in price from $1700-$3500 and you never know what kind of parts they put them back together with. I dont want to drop a bunch of money to get something with a cheap made in china piston/gasket set.

I know I already sent you the link to Sunwest. Email them and ask for brand names of the parts they use. They have always been helpful.

I see 3.4's pop up on CL all the time, I would go that route If you don't want to fork out 3g's. Good luck, hope you get it running soon

Sunwest seems like the best place for a rebuild, but id probably be looking at $3500+ to get that beast back in the 4Runner.

Currently looking to at getting a low mileage Canadian import

So i went to look at JDM Imports today and they have virtually no info on what year any of the motors came out of. I remember the 96/97 had some issue with the HG so i would like to avoid that year. I managed to grab the block numbers but cannot reference it to anything i find on the internet.

Block #'s
0555954
0944613
0892915

Maybe they are sequential and the higher the number the later the production date? Anyone with any info please chime in

Just what is wrong with your engine that is busted.

Is there not enough left to rebuild which might be cheaper in the long run

Time mainly. Also i don't trust my abilities enough to be able to tear into a motor not really knowing what im doing. I would probably just make a big unsalvageable mess before swapping a motor anyways... ha.

Still havent found any update on the block #'s...
