How to sell a Cat

If thieves can make money selling stolen catalytic converters, then I should be able to get recoup some money selling the one off my soon to crushed truck. I don't spend much time in salvage yards, what's the best way to find one that buys cat? Should I prepare myself for being hassled for bringing in a commonly stolen part? Should I be removing anything else off my truck to take to the salvage yard. Toyota is nickle and diming me with this buyback, and I can barely afford payments on a new truck, so I need to get as much out of this as I can.

Salvage yards generally do not buy cats because of the potential for stolen cats.

You may have to advertise it on CL to find core buyers. You can also try and find local core buyers, or scrap metal buyers (Locally we have ARROW metals)

There are people who buy used cats and other exhaust components.
Try and find someone who does. A good Toyota cat can fetch $50.

I think it's illegal to sell a cat, I think they take it to other people with a shady background who melt down the platinum. I think you can only get away with selling a cat if you include the rest of the exhaust system with it, or at least the muffler. I dont' know for sure, but that's what I've heard.

yeah thats not true at all... you can't tell someone what they are "allowed" to sell.... I can sell anything that i personally own... ANYTHING (except drugs/weapons of mass destruction)

some places just won't buy it because it might be stolen and they don't want to promote the theft

Its not illegal at all to sell cats, we sell them by the box full here at work.

However, most places will not buy cats, and some places (like wrecking yards) are held by the law when it comes to purchasing and selling them.

It IS illegal to sell a cat for use in a motor vehicle without getting a state recertification. It is not illegal to sell it for scrap.

If they are not illegal to sell, then why can't you buy one at Pick N Pull?

Is he a tweaker? *kidding*

In all seriousness I bet you could just post it up here or CL, because about every day we get a new post about someone getting their cat stolen! To buy an OEM Cat for a Toyota costs hundreds!

Again, Scrap yards are governed by the law, and as such cannot sell cats to the general public. They can be sold to licensed scrappers only, unless they have a legal recertification.

A thread from the dead.

It's been two years and I'm finally tired of having the cat in my garage. The local place listed above doesn't buy them, but I found another place that that does. I was offered $45. It seems like I was low-balled because the guy said I had a clean burning engine and didn't need as much "stuff" to meet EPA. Funny thing, I never told the guy what engine I had, just a 2000 Tacoma. So if this cat was from a 3.4L V6, is $45 a decent price?

I can't believe people would take the time to steal something worth so little. Seams the risk of getting caught out-weight the reward, but who am I to know; an honest citizen.
