How Reliable is the 3VZ?

hey all, im thinking about selling my 92 22re pickup and going for a V6 of the same year. i know the 22re cant be beat in terms of reliability but i want something with a little more power. the only second thought im having about the v6 is that a buddy of mines dad has a 93 4runner with 180k and he has already had to replace the top end twice (about a $3000 repair). this man takes better care of his cars than himself so its not an ownership issue, and he is the original owner. is that a freak incidence or a common repair?

If you take the time to make them reliable i.e. weazy cams etc. In the end it's probably worth a swap to the newer model year engine.
