220,000+ miles on my '84 pickup. Been on 32s or 33s for a good while, so accuracy is a bit off....

Timing Chain Mileage on First-Gen 4Runner

Folks
I would like to play it safe on my timing chain, but if it ain't broke don't fix it so while we're on the topic of mileage, may I ask:
At what mileage you had your timing chain (first-gen 4Runner) replaced?
Did you have it replaced because it broke, or had signs of damage?

This will give us idea of when to open it up, yet not prematurely mess (Painful Maintenance) with it.

TIA.

Hmmmm, replaced mine at 254K Miles. Original Chain and didn't have a kink in it/guides were both in 100% integrity condition. HOWEVER, ...measured the chain and it DID have a bit past the 'recommended' slack in it, lol... I suppose that would push the tensioner to it's limits, eventually, and possibly cause some slap/guide snappage/eventually wear through the cover(which isn't TOTALLY uncommon). I also had around 100-120# compression, max, with some 25-30# variations... It was probably time, but still didn't smoke a PUFF! lol.

Could just take a peek in there and inspect the guides... If they're in tact..why mess with it? Wait til it's tired and 120 or less in compression..... and then do a full rebuild or at least re-ring and valve job/timing kit w/steel guide swap?

Thanks, Chef!. Yes, compression check will be my next step. Hopin' she's still well. I drove to L.A. and back to Sun Diego twice last week, passed newer vehicles whose drivers were napping many times, and still got 22 mpg. I also waxed her last weekend and she's lookin' shiny for her 25 years, except:
  • Clear coat on hood seems gone (direct sunlight and engine heat?),
  • Got minor rust spots on the roof, etc
  • Wind-friction wear on some spots
I have started to touch those up.

She's got 170,000 plus (on original engine & drivetrain I think).

Regards,
RAD

Getting 22mpg with stock tires, RAD? Pretty good, ESPECIALLY if you're rolling 31's or more.

Sounds healthy to me, man.... I doubt you need to mess with it if you're not hearing chain slap or dont' see any carnage when you pull the v-cover off?

I know this has got to be one of the longest threads that I have seen where some of these are back from 2004...
with that being said...
I only have 153 125miles on my 4runner v6 auto. I have only driven the 4runner for about 600 miles.

I will be buying a 1992-2000 toyota pickup soon.

I also drive a 1988 toyota supra with about 88 000 miles on it. My car is my pride and joy and the 4runner is my get around project.

Toyota recommends 100K miles for the 22r(e)(t-ec) timing chain. Seems like most people push it off to 125K-150K. Personally, I would (and do) check it every summer for guide wear/failures and stretching.

Hey 907, ....

You pull the cover and chain and measure every summer?(after 100K I'm presuming, right?)>>> NOW THAT'S due diligence!!!
