Seth--I have a "screamer" installed installed in my truck--it is earpiercing. It is hard to stay in the truck when it goes off.

 

I'm just glad that I live somewhere where that kinda stuff doesn't happen anymore...when I lived in Washington D.C., oh man, all night you would hear alarms going off, people screaming, fights, and even sometimes gunshots if you were near the ghetto.

Now...all I hear are my dogs snoring, coyote's howling and the occasional Chevy 1500 with dual 40's rumbling down my road...lol. And the occasional cow noises...only when they're in heat...eesh.

Marc- where did you get your "screamer" and how large is it?

 

I have had 3 alarm installed at Progressive Mobile Electronics--all of them had screamers. It is small, I havent seen it in a long time. I think it is a small square siren, Maybe 3 in x 3 in?

 

Park in your garage at night...if you don't have one, get one!

 

What about a steering wheel that disconnects (Grant?)? Like the others said...make them work to get your rig....multiple systems...etc.

how bout that armored alarm stuff like in the first batman movie.....u know, the huge steel scales covering the entire body of the vehicle that retract at the push of a button....impenatrable to anything but a nuclear blast. OOH, or better yet, how bout that set up in one of the recent 007 films.....he had the bmw that had that alarm system where the guys were hitting the glass and the body with 20 pound sledges and it didnt phase it at all....and it electricuted them if the touched it. (actually a seemingly good idea)

 

The more I think about it, the more I'm concerned about my truck as well. I'm not longer in SD and I do have some minimal protection but with the 1st gens, man some of these keys/keyholes are so worn out that you could probably stick a butter knife in and open some of these doors.

They may get it started or tow it, but they won't be driving it away. If a pro wants it, they'll get it, but I'll stop 99% of your average joy rider who'd just trash it for fun.

Last guy that was caught at work breaking into a car went to the hospital for 2 weeks after the shop guys got a hold of him crowbar style.

 

years ago, my bro-in-law had his 1st gen broken into and they got in by ramming a flathead/slotted screwdriver into the keyhole and turned... they busted the lock and just opened the door.

am I the only one that knows that this can be done?

 

Nope...on my 1987 they tried that must have slipped because they punched a hole next to the lock. They ended up busting out the window to get a fricking $89 radar detector. $250 deductible for a $89 detector....I wish I would have caught them.

 

You could go to your local Home Depot's audio/video section and pick up one of their $50 infrared, night vision, color cameras that you can then hook up to your VCR and stash outside somewhere in an inconspicuous place that is protected from the rain.

That way you can see who it was that f'd with your ride because as slick as some of them are, they could easily get in, out and gone long before you could do anything, but you would have video evidence of them doing it, understand ?

Unfortunately, this would only work while you were at home.

they have one that has a camera that takes pictures every 3 seconds if the car is being broken into- sends it to a website... dont know what its called... i think i might have seen it on pimp my ride so maybe id shy away from that idea afterall...

 

The solution is simple, you need more body damage. i would start with the fenders and work my way up.

Seriously though it helps if you have motion activated lights pointed where you park your truck at night. more than one is always good, thieves tend to shy away if an area is VERY brightly lit.

 

I say if you really want to secure it. sale all of that stuff you bought for it and put the money towards a lo-jac or something.

 

I installed a kill switch on the wiring to the fuel pump which cost about $10 otherwise mine is garaged most of the time.
