How to check engine compression?

What machine is used to check engine compression? If it is not determined by a machine, how does one find out the compression?

Also if an engine is designed for Regular gasoline and you run premium on it for a little bit wont there be a buildup inside somewhere (maybe charcoal canister) of excess gas? (forgot the word to use)

Thanks,

Compression testing is EASY, atleast it is on a 22re. the 3vze, well, i havent tried that one yet, im not even thinking about that.

basics of comp. testing.

remove all spark plugs.
remove wire going from coil to distributor at the dist. using jumper cables, ground that.
unplug EFI fuse (so motor will crank but not spit fuel)
screw in compression tester (can be had at walmart for under 20)
have friend (i had my mom do it) hold throttle at WOT and crank engine. you should see the pressure gauge rise

I think 22r-e's are supposed to have 142 minimum PSI. 175 is the "new" specification i think.

here we go
Compression Ratio .................................. 9.3:1
Compression Pressure ............... 178 psi (12.5 kg/cm )
Minimum Compression Pressure ....... 142 psi (10.0 kg/cm )
Maximum Variation Between Cylinders .. 14 psi (1.0 kg/cm )

and for the v6 3.slow
Compression Ratio .................................. 9.0:1
Compression Pressure ............... 171 psi (12.0 kg/cm )
Minimum Compression Pressure ....... 142 psi (10.0 kg/cm )
Maximum Variation Between Cylinders .. 14 psi (1.0 kg/cm )

hmm.... not positive on the higher octane question. i do know that 92 does burn slower and wont ping as easily, but that's about it. as far as the carbon goes, i dont know. i wouldnt worry about it. maybe run half a can of seafoam through it

The FSM has complete instructions on compression testing: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...66compress.pdf

Seeing as how we are talking about compression... I was wondering what do you all think about 150psi compression on all 4 cylinders on a 22r with 218,000 on it. Rebuild or swap?

Rebuild???

That's excellent compression. I know a few 22res that have 90PSI in all cylinders and running great. You've got a looooong way before a rebuild!!!

Cool thanx, the only reason why I was wondering was beacuse it was close to the min on the spec of 140 psi. And I was trying to decide to keep this engine or do a swap to the 22re. Yeah now I guess I can dump money into this engine like header exhaust and new webber carb, I just didn't want to throw away my money into an enigne that didn't have much life left.
