Heater questions

Took apart the heater on my first gen pickup today to clean it out, was wondering what this is?

It goes here

Some sort of thermostat? Temperature sensor?

Also (the reason I put this in general tech) all the foam that seals/insulates the little flapper doors and joints where the various ducts connect is worn out. Any idea what to replace it with (and if so where to get it)?

Its a blower speed resister for your fan control. It pretty much allows current to flow through it for low-mid-high fan speeds. The highest setting does not run through this resistor, so without it, your fan should work on the highest speed.

Well its location is not particularly important, I think they just stuck it in there because its safe in there lol.

As far as foam, I would use some 1/4" weather stripping or possibly thinner. Something like this
