Hanging on to your shackles

I was driving around several months ago and stopped to get gas and noticed that the shackle/d-ring that i have in my hitch had manage to unscrew itself and the whole d-ring was hanging on by a thread (literally a thread, one of the threads on the pin). ever since then ive taken the d-ring off and just left the hanger in the hitch receiver tube. i know a lot of yall drive around with shackles front and rear...how do you keep them from vibrating loose and falling out? if you tighten them with pliers or vice grips, do you just keep a pair with you so you can undo it when needed or what? thanks guys
