Gasket Surface Prep

In the middle of rebuilding my 20/22r and need some help. I cant remember at all to what grit I need to sand the gasket surfaces on aluminum heads and attaching parts.

The head gasket surface on the head I'm almost positive was 400grit but I don't have a clue about intake, exhaust, valve cover area, and timing gasket area.

Also I picked up some 20r heads and I been hunting all over the place for the brass hex things in the middle of the camshaft area. Anyone have a clue what those are called or even where to get them? Someone attempted to get them out for what ever reason and failed horribly!

Thanks guys. I'll be back on the trails once I get this thing all put back together!!

whenever we prep surfaces, we just scrape as much of the old gasket material off as possible, scrub it down real good with a red scotch bright pad, then take some acetone/lacquer thinner and wipe it down really well.

the gasket goo remover stuff (name???) should be adequate if the surfaces are flat.

the scotch brite red is what, ~600-800??

i like isopropyl alcohol for the finish cleaning.
