i have a weird ticking noise, i know its not my valves, i pondered the fact that it may be an exhaust leak, but i was wondering if there was anything notorious on toyotas that would cause such a noise. I have a 22RE witha 5-speed and this noise happens when the RPM's are from 2000-3000, above or below that and the truck sounds great, it may just be some stupid thing, since my trucks been rebuilt from the frame up, any help would be GREAT!!

 

So it's a rebuilt motor? hmmmmmm. Odd.

I'd say either your timing chain is slapping or something else internal. I'd think an exhaust leak would be at any rpm.

 

I found the noise!!! i kind of thought it may be possible for it to be a timing chain, but didnt really think it was until i found metal in my oil. and sure enough, the chain almost made it through the cover, now that i think about it, the sound had been occuring since i bought the truck, 5 months ago, i'm really lucky i didnt fry my engine, thanks for pointing the timing chain out, probably saved me loads of cash.
