front/rear axle width
#1
What's the difference in rear axle widths between a 1983 pickup, and a 1990?
If I do a IFS hub swap to the '83, will installing a rear axle from 1990 make the front and rear widths the same? (or will I even need to?)
Are wheel spacers (1",2",3") just used so the wheel doesn't contact the bigger (V6) calipers?
Thanks.

86 and up rear axles are 3" wider than previous years.
Get a widening kit or 1.5" wheel spacers to get the correct width.
Wheel clearance on the rear usually isn't a problem, but the front might be, depending on your backspacing. I have 2.5" backspacing, and I added some .25" wheel spacers, and it still rubbed my V6 calipers. I had to grind the fins off the caliper AND use the spacers for it to clear.
FYI your not going to hurt anything by running a narrow front. Mine is narrow, and doesn't affect anything. (rubs springs a little, but I need to set my steering stops)
