First Post!!! Tacoma starting issues

Hello everyone,
I was referred to this forum by a friend that thought this would be the place to ask my question about my Tacoma. Here is what I posted in that forum...

Hey everyone,
As you all remember I posted a while back about my Tacoma not starting all the time. Starter goes, truck starts for a brief moment but then dies before really hitting idle speed.

I have cleaned the MAF three times with MAF cleaner. This, I thought, had remedied the problem since I was using a K&N air filter (which I'm not any more!!). I think I was wrong though.

What is happening is this....On a cold start, like if it's been sitting all night or even for an hour or so, she'll start right up. The problem lies with starting it up after the yota only being off for a brief moment.

When I'm running around town and such, in somewhere and back out in 10 mins or so, and try to start it, this is when I get some probs.

It takes like 5 tries until the engine will finally roll over and stay at idle. After that everything acts as normal. This difficulty doesn't ALWAYS occur, but it seems to only occur when my truck has only been off for a brief moment, 5-45 mins or something if I had to put a number on it.

So what the crap is wrong? Doesn't seem like the starter, or the MAF does it?

I have no clue....

Any hints would be wonderful. I don't really want to spill out 100 bucks at a service dept for them to say..."unless we can replicate the problem here we cannot fix it"

Thanks everyone!!!

replace your MAF. My dad had the same problem, its from your k&n filter.

Also, i had his problem and it would always start on try #2 by giving it some gas while cranking

welcome to YotaTech. and it sounds like a misused K&N is to blame. i have been running mine in my 3.0L V6 for 27,000kms now and have had no problems. i clean it every few months to make sure. but i agree with 89macrunner, a new MAF would be one solution.

So the MAF is blown? Cleaning with MAF cleaner won't remedy the problem?

How much does the MAF cost??

Thanks!!

Ok guys...so I just noticed that there is a red bulb on the bottom of the MAF sensor. It was really gummed up and I cleaned it. Should I try my MAF again before buying a new one since this was dirty...I don't know how i missed it!!

Thanks!
