faulty oil filter = locked engine

well well the other day i put the new oil filter onto my sister's car when i changed her oil...little did i know there was a crack in the top left side of the filter that wasn't visible because it was painted over. when she drove to town the pressure blew the paint out and she lost all the oil and her car locked up ...wouldnt have happened if she bought a Fram like i said. So now advance is putting in a claim with Purolater to see if they can pay for or help pay for the new motor we now need. she didnt see the idiot light flashing or her oil pressure gauge go to zero because she had a picture of herself on her dash...stupid stupid stupid....looks like i know what i'm doing for the next month.

I suggest you post a scan of the picture so we can be the judge of whether or not it was worth it...

Purolator is supposed to be a decent brand, but for whatever reason I've never liked them.

I do not buy Fram anymore. I have read way too much bad stuff about them to use them anymore. I use the Walmart brand filters now. They're built very well and I have heard nothing but good things about the filtration they give.

Fram is prolly the cheapest made filter out there or close to it. Cut one open.

honestly, if it's the right oil filter, it really doesn't matter which brand it is, as long as it is the right application to your car. I think it's stupid that people would buy TRD oil filters, which cost way more than a fram does. Before you counteract with saying, well then why would you buy a K&N air filter, as long as it fits right? An oil filter is an oil filter is an oil filter. There are some things on a vehicle that don't benifit the performance, or even the appearence of it. It's kinda like the ricers saying they got 25 more horsepower from adding a NOS sticker, or other kind of sticker. You can disagree all you want, but really it just doesn't matter when it come down to the oil filter.

Fram Extra and Fram Double guard make the small list of filters to avoid but most made the cut.

I normally used Puralator Premium Plus on my '93 Eclipse GSX and then the last few seasons I raced it I switched over to their PureOne filters and while they say this one seems to have almost too much filtering element which would restrict flow I never had any problems with them. I also never noticed any increase in oil pressure and this was using a real guage and not the the factory sender.

With my Runner I've used a couple of Mobile 1 filters but I don't think they are worth the extra cost and I just stick with the Puralator Premium version.

This is the main reason why I stick with OEM and if OEM filters are not available, I go for either Wix, Napa Gold, or newer Amsoil oil filter.

yes the old gasket came off with the old filter and i lubed the new seal with fresh oil like always before putting on.. it was simply a 1/2 inch long split in the filter itself...ironic how a $2 part can cause thousands in damage

The size the filtration media, the number of pleats, the size of the pleats, the quality of all of the various components/materials, and filtration efficiency are important things to consider when selecting an oil filter. I'm interested to know where you ever got the idea that an oil filter is an oil filter. Did you read this somewhere on the internet, hear it from someone you considered versed in automotive, or did you just make it up? Nobody is saying that an oil filter is going to increase power, but it is a fact that some filters are of higher quality and filter better than others.

What you're saying is the same as saying that all automotive parts are the same, as long as they fit. Or, that all spark plugs are going to work the same, all wiper blades, or tires, or axles, or anything elses are going to be the same as long as they are for the same application. Again, I'm interested to know where you got this idea from.

As far as a good filter goes, Wix and NapaGold (made by Wix) are definately some of the top contenders. Amsoil, Mobil1, K&N, and Purolator PureOne are also on the top. I got a huge supply of ACDelco filters for cheap which I've been using, and would recommend those too. And of course, you can't go wrong with OEM.

to bring this thread back to life... we finished swapping a new nissan 4cyl into the car that we picked up from the local U-Pull-It for $150 with only 100k on it, no smoke or anything. Purolater paid us the $1500 or so we were quoted from a local shop so we made a little money from this headache
