Extra Cab Cargo Shelf Build

Like many 2nd gen extra cab pickups, mine was missing the factory cargo shelf behind the seats so I decided to build my own. Here goes.

materials:
3/4"x12"x53" particle board shelf
53" of quarter-round moulding
Spray adhesive
1/2 yard of light gray automotive trunk liner
Staples for staple gun
1 1/4" sheetrock screws

Tools:
Staple gun
Screw gun
Jigsaw

The width of the shelf will be 53"
Home Depot should be able to cut it for you
The same goes for the 1/4 round moulding

To mark the contours of the back of the cab on the board, use a drafting compass and set the shelf in the back of the truck and set the spacing of the compass to the width of the amount you need to cut off of the shelf to get the front where you want it.

Drag the compass along the back of the cab along the shelf. This will transfer the contours onto the shelf. Cut the shelf along the line and test fit it in the truck.

Once you are happy with the fit, its time for the felt. Place the felt on the top surface of the shelf along the front edge with about 3" hanging off the front. Staple the felt along the front edge of the shelf on the top edge. Once this is done, fold the 3" piece back over itself and set the 1/4 round moulding on top of this fold lining it up with the front edge of the shelf. Screw it in from the bottom of the shelf using five or six screws.

Spray the 1/4 round and the front edge of the shelf with the spray glue and fold the felt back over and wrap it around the front and under the shelf. Pull it tight and staple it along the bottom edge of the shelf about every inch.

Lift up the felt on the top surface of the shelf and spray glue on the top of the shelf and the underside of the felt and press the felt onto the surface. Flip the shelf over and stretch the fabric and staple it to the bottom side of the shelf.

Trim the excess felt off of the ends and set it in place in the truck.

I drilled two holes in each of the factory shelf brackets and put a couple 5/8" wood screws up through the bottom to secure it in place.

Done.
I hope the process has been clearly described. I you have any questions PM me and I will do my best to clarify.
