Extended cab dog accommodations

Extended cab dog accommodations
I have a 2001 extended cab Tacoma and my girlfriend's lab doesn't ride well in the cab with us. Putting him in the bed isn't an option either. I would appreciate insite of anyone who has made a modification to their cab to create a better platform for a dog to sit on in the extended part of the cab. I do have passengers back there from time to time so it would have to be removeable or only half width.
I could remove the flip-down seat and back rest on one side creating a larger seat sans seat back that would fill up to the front seat. Would a piece of carpeted plywood across the cupholder be enough to handle a squirmy 50lbs lab?
Ideas and pictures of similar setups apprecated.

He will sit on the passenger seat when there is only one person in the truck and he stays in the back when two people are in the cab but because of the uneven floor, namely the built in storage cubbies he is always shifting position especially during acceleration and braking. I just want him to be comfortable.

My one friend who has an extended tacoma took out the folding seats then built a platform which was all level, then covered it in carpet. This gave the pup a place to dig his nails into when turns and braking was done. Plus, how often does someone really sit back there. when i was looking at t100s I was going to take out the back seats and build a platform for my pups... but then i got the 4runner instead

I've got a similar problem in my 'Runner with my poochies. I typically fold the seat bottom forward but keep the seat back up so they have things to lean against as I drive. The uneven floor gave them fits until I got some old pillows and stuffed them into the low spots. Then I just toss one of their beds over that and they are good to go !
Old bean bags like mentioned earlier would also probably work. Maybe even some high density foam like they use for sleeping mats when camping ?
Good luck,
Steve
