Ex. Manifold leak, head and mani are FLAT!

I have an 85 toyota 2wd with a 22r and have come across 2 sizeable exhaust leaks. One at the head, and one at the "collector" where the manifold meets the downpipe. The down pipe I have a feeling is because of the latter part of my exhaust work and its horrible quality (thanks 98 tire), but the manifold has me confused.

I have used a straight edge (aluminum ruler)on both surfaces to see if they were flat, and both surfaces check out. Aside from a new gasket, what can I do?

I have spent my resources on what it could be and have come to you guys for help.

Also, are 2wd builds welcome here?

2wd builds are great! make sure you get a quality gasket and check the manifold for cracks. I just picked up a 91 2wd and started my build thread last weak. I think it's titled mightymouses's 91 2wd build up thread. truck's name is travis.

Are you certain all of your bolts are solid? I had a leak on the 22re and it turned out that the PO had snapped a bolt on the manifold and it was in the head, broken off about 1/4" into the head! This was likely my leak. Luckily we got it backed out to make room for the LCE header

I'd start there.

I will look at it a bit deeper this afternoon after work, but all the bolts seem to have been full length and the studs did not come out. Why would a nut back off a little when I tightened it though? Seems that they were a bit looser than I remember them being. Is there a chance of finding the correct bolts locally, rather than ordering the kit from LC?

Oh, and I would buy a header, but I am bagged and body dropped so I can't run anything off the shelf exhaust wise. It sucks haha. Oh well, it comes with being low

should all 10 fasnter holes be studs, or should it be a combo of studs and bolts?I ask because a couple of mine are studs with a bolt locked on them, acting a bolt. If they all need to be studs, and seperate nus, I will get the correct amount of studs and pull all the old ones out.

I just ordered the Dorman replacements as it was a little cheaper than the OEM toyota stuff. I ordered 8 studs, should I have ordered 10?? I know there is 10 holes, but I want to say there was two actual BOLTS and not just 10 studs. Am I wrong?

8 or 10?

Well, back to square one.....or 0, whichever. 8 new studs, 2 airtube block off plates, and 2 damn exhaust leaks. Looks like it's time to start pricing custom headers and exhaust systems. This is NOT what I wanted my money being dumped into. The UZ swap was supposed to be next year but that's being put on hold if i'm dropping 4-500 in exhaust alone.
