Engine Rebuild: Need Some Advice
Im rebuilding a 22r.. I currently don't have a pickup to put it in.. but can anyone tell me the differences in a pre-84 rebuild kit and a post-84 kit? were the blocks different? Heads?? Any one know any tips or tricks for assembly?? im just trying to expand my know-how... Any help or advice would be appreciated.. Thanks!!

EFI vs Carb will have different gaskets. EFI needs plenum and throttle body as well as a few others for EGR and fuel system that is different than carb set up.
Believe the head is the same and the timing cover also.

Here is the difference between 84 and earlier and 85 and newer.
Edit...Just because I say "22re" doesnt mean necessarily a fuel injected block, I actually mean the newer block versus the older block.
Copied...
I got my Timing Chain on and had to replace the Timing Cover due to it being worn. I tried to use a early model 22r and they wont interchange. Thought I would put some info up to help others identify what they may have.
84 and older. 22r has no dimples/circles and the number "2" on it. Twistedyota got it right on the height thing, see the last picture for a good example. I also tried to mark which bolt holes for removing the timing cover on down the road when I have to do a chain again. Hope it wont burn off but it if does I tried to come up with an easier way. Never can remember which bolts they are.

22re has "6k" and dimples/circles. 85 and up.

Here is what I am talking about on the 1/8th inch height. I used a lockwasher to help show how much of a difference. This cover is 22r. Seems like the oil pump bolts were to short. Hope this will save some one some trouble. It is an early model 22r timing cover on a newer 22re block.

On a 84 and older block, the old style block dont have a place for the Knock Sensor or Fuel Filter mount and both are on the passenger side. I understand the timing kits are not interchangeable.
I am sure there are some other difference but these are the quickest way to identify which block you have and some differences in my opinio.
The 85 and newer blocks will have a place for the fuel filter mount and knock sensor shown below.
