Engine block - what to look for?

Hey guys,

I’ve found a 22re engine block on a used website.. planning on slowly building it as I find parts.

Anyone have any advice on what to look for on an old engine block?

Thanks!

Make sure it's the right generation block. 20R and early 22R blocks are not compatible. Make sure the original main bearing caps are included. Check for scoring on the cylinder walls. Best to measure the bore to see if it has any meat left to bore if necessary. If the pistons are in there they should be marked on top to indicate what size oversize they are. Check for stripped threads or broken bolts. Check the water passages for excessive erosion. If you're not going to deck the block, it's best if the matching timing cover is included since the top surfaces of each are supposed to be machined as a pair. If you're going to deck the block, just make sure a timing cover of any source is installed when the shop does the work. If the crank is included, check for scoring on the journals. If you can measure the size of the journals check to see if it's already be ground undersize.
