Diesel or Gasser?
So I'm playing with the idea of swapping the 22R out of my 82. 2 main reasons really.
1. It's got high mileage, 256k kilometers.
2. It's carb'd and carbs run kinda junky at angles.
So now my question is what kind of engine do I want to drop in this thing. I've got it narrowed down to 2 choices already but it's the question of gas or diesel? factory turbo or aftermarket?
My choices are as follows:
1. 7MGTE aka Mk3 Supra Turbo motor backed by an R151 trans and dual t-cases with a Marlin Adapter. Some Simple bolt ons like an exhaust, intake, up the boost a lil, etc.
2. 3B aka Land Cruiser diesel. Backed by a W56 and dual t-cases with a Marlin Adapter. A turbo 'kit' will have to be added from the aftermarket side of things. Plus any management it might need.
Both are great options but each have there down sides.
Supra Motor:
1. Will have to run at least 91-92 octane. 94 octane would be perferable but not always possible.
2. Intercooler mounting, this could get interesting.
Land Crusier Motor:
1. Diesel availability. Not all service stations have it so this may be an issue.
2. Intercooler mount, again might be interesting.
Give me some feedback here. I'm doing some research of both so...

is that the best diesel option out there? I think the 2LTE has the same motor mounts as the 22R. Also, I think the 1KZTE is getting favorable reviews for power and economy. ?have you looked around at http://toyotadieselmadness.com/

The 7MGTE shares the same motor mounts as the 22R-E, which is kind of a nice feature (no fabbing that). Another is that it puts out fantastic power while stock.
I don't know anything about the Toyota diesels other than theyre expensive to import. ;-)

Why would you HAVE to run premium with the 7MGTE? I had a buddy with an 87 he bought new(sold it last year), he normally ran 86 octane. No problems.
Sure premium is always better, but required?
I vote diesel either way! Mabey a 4cyl cummins?...I forget what they're called. I though it was 3B...mabey 4B.

$5000 eh, forget that.
I can get a 3B diesel for much less then $5000, about a 1/5th of that.
The 3B isn't too bad of a motor, my friend has one in his Runner now and seems to really really like it.

Most turbo engines need premuim fuel, especially with higher then stock boost.
I won't be putting a Cummins, Chevy, or anything none Toyota in my truck. It's gotta be a Toyota motor.

I gotta vote with the diesel, it is more environmentally friendly [argueably]and you can make your own boogie juice at home if you want...
the 2lte diesel was the diesel option for a while in these trucks but it was reportedly problematic and underpowered.
the landy diesel was [and is] rock solid though you might have fit issues squeezing it in the smaller bay of the hilux. you'd definitly need to switch to an electric fan.
keep us posted on the swap...
cheers aviator
