Maybe next time I'm down in Florida visiting my family, I'll swing by and let you change my oil. ;D

Heck, if I was close I'd change the ENGINE for you! Have you thought about possibly pulling an engine and swapping it from one of your other 4Runners? Even if it were only temporarily, until you got the original engine fixed. It may only need the crank reground and new bearings/seals, and it could be done on an engine stand. Of course someone would have to check some other things out first, like the camshaft journals, to see if it would be worth the time to save. Maybe enroll your daughter in a Vo-Tech and she could rebuild your engine at school?

As for the engines out of my other 4runners, Alpha has 260k on her and a weld job on the crank already (key/collett to the pulley). My other '89 (Dog Paddle) is currently my daily driver with 180k on him. I've not had him for more than 6 weeks, and who knows what surprises I may run into. Plus, something that old, who knows, it might not hold up to pull the engine. I think I'll leave well-enough alone on that one.
Interestingly enough, my daughter DOES plan to go on to vo-tech, but up here, they don't let you bring in your project cars. I already asked on that... and she'll be doing her business classes first (next year) and tech the year after. I need to make sure that she is serious about pursuing auto mechanics. This is a kid who typically changes her mind every year or so. Although I did buy her a new toolbox for St Patrick's day!
My brother (who I only see twice a year) seems to think we could swap out the engine no problem, but he's more into the Ford 402(?) in a '89 Bronco and I'm better with a Chevy 350, or an Olds Rocket engine... I'm pretty capable on the external motor stuff, girly stuff, ya know like the alternator, starter, maybe some electronics, but the engine swap has me a bit nervous.
If I play my cards right, hopefully the guy will see my reasoning and agree that the filter simply wasn't on tight, blew the gaket, lost my oil, cost me my rod and bearings. I think for him to file an insurance claim sure would be best for me! And maybe I could buy that 22k motor off of Insane04...
Ha! Got it all planned out in my wee small brain.... say a prayer, eh?

I just finished up an engine for a customer that had his oil change done at a local Jiffy-Loob.They denied all accountability until he served them with papers from small claims court-then they promptly turned the whole mess over to their insurance company. They came to my shop, listened to it,snapped a few pictures, and paid him ALL the money for a re-man.
I have seen many of these outfits blame an overpressure of the oil pump for their crappy filters.DO NOT give the filter to them under the guise of being sent out for testing-you'll never see it again and your evidence will be gone.Instead, buy another one of theirs and compare the diameter. They try to claim that the filter is ballooned in size when this "over-pressure" or "spike" occurs, then the gasket gave out.
Hope this is of some help to you.

I wouldn't do that.
If you try to get him to scam the insurance than what is stopping him from saying that your scaming him and screw you out of his mistake. Be as honest and bold as you can and let carma handle the rest.

Schmuck!
Ok, so I filed a complaint with the Attorney General (apparanetly that is the due course) after the oil change mgr didn't return my call for a full week. I had wanted to give him an opportunity to see my documentation and evidence, and encourage him to file an insurance claim. So that was my plan, right? But he never returned y call. So I filed with the Attoenwey General last Thursday. Yesterday, Monday, I called for the manager again. Now I'm told he is on VACATION for TWO weeks! What a schmuck!
I've been told that Small claims court only awards up to $1500 on a case, so I had planned on pursuing him through regular court. Actually , I had planned on him doing the right thing in the first place.... yeah, right!
I hate having to be confrontational... gets my tummy all in knots... I sure can use the prayers. Thanks, guys!
