Cleaning an alternator

This is what the alternator from my 22re looks like.

it is covered in a mixture of oil, coolant and mostly mud. What would be the best way to go about cleaning it without damaging it. Can I dunk it in cleaning solution? Or do I need to dry clean it the best that I can? Wire wheel and such.

Cleaning solution, brake cleaner, carb cleaner may degrease the bearing(s). I'd scrape that gunk off with a putty knife with the shop vac sucking it up as I scrape. Then split it in two and hit it the inside with electrical parts cleaner trying to avoid the bearings.

I use this when it starts to get bad:

Never had any problems with it. Available at almost any auto parts store.
