So... is it me, or does everyone have this issue?

This is the second set of linings that have separated on me. Both happend on the right side (left side's always been okay), both were Raybestos reliners.

...and yeah, this time the drum is quite scared.


Any ideas on what may be causing this?

Hmmm... okay, it's the only mfg option I've ever been given at my local friendly Schucks and corporate Napa. There's an independent Napa a bit farther down the road, I'll try him.

The thing that hits me though is that the issue's only ever happend on the right side - the left has always been fine. This will be the 3rd set of shoes in 3 years.

 

Umm, please tell me it's not something I did to your brakes. :cry:

For those looking over my/our shoulder, Shannon did her first brake job (tee-hee - I said "brake job") last Friday. I let her learned on my right front, and she did swell!

if you have any questions you could talk to aaron at dans fast right by barrier mercedes in bellevue, he has always helped me out and knows a lot. he is there m-f till 5:30 i think. i know you prolly want to do the work yourself but he might have some ideas for you. good luck

 

Those were probably "bonded" shoes instead of riveted. The bonded shoes are just glued to the backing plates, where the riveted shoes have rivets holding the shoes on.

When I worked at City Dash on Ford vans, I used to see the cheap bonded shoes come off all the time, but the riveted ones never had problems.

 

Id go back to the store and demand a refund under warntee as they shouldnt do that, and demand new drums.

Okay... any brand suggestions? I mentioned above that all I've ever been offered from the local parts shops are Raybestos.

ha! yea! Brakes are fun. Especially drum brakes! Getting the drums off is awsome! And all those little springs and clips, man what a good time!

See what Toyota wants for a set. That would be the best.

edit...they list for $70, and can be had online at partznet for $56. Id go for it.

 

I may be misunderstanding the pics, but those shoes don't look like they seperated. They look like they simply wore out. Are you sure that they weren't dragging? You need to check that the self adjusters are working properly and that the parking brake is fully releasing. I know it's too late now, but make sure you get the drums turned when changing shoes.

Stick w/ a riveted shoe and you will be fine. Bonded shoes have a tendency to do that.

 

You're misunderstanding the pics-that's ONE side worth of shoes and it seems there's still plenty of material left, just that none of it happens to be on the actual shoes.

Is it stupid to ask about primary and secondary placement? I haven't done the brakes on the 4runner yet so don't know if this is even an issue. I sold raybestos to shops for many years and only remember one ever coming unbonded....seems odd it's on the same side and it's both shoes both times.

 

Ummm, the pad actually came off of the shoe... Check this pic, it's from the last time this happened:

The adjusters are okay.. I always back them all the way down and then let them adjust into position.

Turning wise... yeah, I should, but time & $$$ aren't on my side right now. I'm also prepping for a little battle with Schucks for new drums. And yeup, I understand that the scored drum is trashing the pad... Not my problem as Schucks will be replacing those pads too.



so... you guys are saying OEM huh? Any idea who makes them for Toyota?

Gawd I hate dealing with a dealer... I'll drop Phil a line and avoid the parts counter.

 

Update...

Schucks refunded the price of the pads. I couldn't find receipt, but they had my history online and it was a slam dunk.

The warranty clearly states that the warranty only covers the price of the materials purchased and nothing more. But, the manager knows me and offered to petition corporate to get me a new set of drums. In the meantime, I went ahead and bought the drums (at 150k, and as bad as this one is torn up, I just felt better than paying to have them turned). I'll have 'em tomorrow and we'll start from scratch.
