Well, I don't know how it works on mud ,but when I had to replace my front seal oil was everywhere !! even on the tail gate . It worked pretty good for me I spayed it on waited about 2 minutes .. spayed somemore .. Then I used a to wash it all down . It came off easy after that . That's all I use to clean with . I used this stuff called ,"Bar keepers friend " on the rims .

when i clean my engine bay i just run down to the local powersports shop (atv, dirtbike, motorcycle dealer) and pick up some of the suzuki motorcycle cleaner.. im sure there are other brands and its probably just something re-bottled with suzuki's name on it but it works awesome.. doesnt pit aluminum like simple green or castrol superclean.. and wont attack vinly coated wireing or rubber like some other cleaners can...but for really nasty grease and goop i go with the castrol superclean.. spray it on, scrub a bit with a stiff brush.. spay some more on, let it sit a bit, then spray a bit more on and hit it with the hose.
