The bumper caused more damage being pushed into the front end!!

Dont know what the owner was thinking with the rear being so skinny looking as well.

Anyone else wanna post some bad bumpers?

 

Idk man, if that bumper wasn't there it still would have been bad IMO

 

That looks like a pretty hard hit. I doubt it would matter what bumper was on there. Probably did better than a stock one though.

 

Yes that looks like it took a solid hit. A super stout bumper, like an ARB, would have undoubtedly helped. But it would still be a pretty bad outcome.

 

Mmm yea dude, Not gonna lie, Short of a TJM ARB or warn bumper, You aint gonna stop another 3,000 + LB vehicle coming at you like a bull...Umm, The smittybuilts arent built very smitty, but i think it took some of the hit...Only thing is if my radiator wasnt screwed, I could have driven that 100 miles home...

 

Do you really think any amount of bumper isn't going to still have some damage occur when a hard impact happens?

 

x2, Given a hard enough hit any metal will crumple...And looking at it again, The bumper on that thing looks really flimsy...

 

Seems to me, in my minds physics, that a stout bumper would hurt the frame more in a hard impact. Cause. . .Idk, just seems like the shock from the hit would be sent through the non reinforced frame and make it buckle in some spots

 

That's exactly what happens if you have a really stout bumper. In a small accident it probably saves your trucks body and is great. In a bigger accident, in addition to helping save the body, it bends the heck out of the frame.

im probably not alone when i ask if there are any crash test videos of off-road bumpers vs. stock? i mean i KNOW they are for off-road, but protection is protection in my mind on-road ,off-road or in space.

 

You want your bumper to give a little.If it was a solid frame mount you could bend your frame,not an easy fix.I have a smittybuilt bumper on my truck and it has taken lots of hard hits ,two of which sent the other persons car two the junkyard.resulting in a few small dings Smitty built bumpers(mounted correctly) are far from weak in my book,You can thank god you had that bumper cause you could have done a lot more damage.SMITTYBUILT ROCKS IN MY BOOK

Not gonna happen,as soon as I got my toyota,i moved to the desert to trade rust for dust.My bumpers have caps that are airtight.You can weld steel caps on smittybuilts and fill them with several hundred lbs of air or whatever you desire,enough to fix a tire,Smittybuilts are OG just like 69 camaros.You take your 2" Hrew tubing and ill take my 4" smittybuilt.It would be like bringing a toothpick to a pencil fightLOL

Modified it how? I cut and welded the brackets on my rear smittybilt to fit my 3" body lift.

 

Most of these custom bumpers only help in small collsions or going through brush.

 

True. But DEFINITELY a necessity offroad. I smacked a tree going up a big hill pretty hard. It put a good dent in my TJM front bumper, and pushed in the core support just a bit. With a stock bumper it probably would have pushed the radiator into the fan.
