that was option 2 in the first post, i am looking into it as well. i am also thinking about doing an exo over the shell instead of inside the shell, something that can be welded to the sliders etc or possibly have a part that can be removed by integrating bolt collars at some point in case i wanted to remove the shell at some point. at any point i can start the project with the seat facing backwards and then down the road cut out the back of the cab and face the seat forwards. either way the cage can easily be extended into the cab of the truck in the case of an internal cage.

 

also the seat can be placed forward of the wheel wells in either case as the truck is an extended cab so it would have @2 plus feet between the rear and front seats

+1 The only thing holding me back from getting a newer runner, I love the 2door. I was thinking about chopping a newer taco the other day and bolting up a 4runner fiberglass top.

 

Or you could get a double cab taco

 

I had a friend with a lowrider - back in the day - that took an s-10, slotted the bed mounts and pushed it against the cab, welded the bed to the cab and molded the fiberglass cap to the back of the cab. He then cut out the rear of the cab (if you hunched over, you could walk into the rear) and put a pair of 1/4 circle "couches" in the back . . . you could probably skip the couches though

there is a 93 reg cab for sale over on colorado4x4.org that has had the bed bobbed and slid forward and a 4 runner top put on it. the guy cut the back of the cab out and it looks very nice. im thinking something like that. i cant quite see how he attached and sealed it but it gives me some ideas.

 

Just so you know, that doesn't look like a runner top...

 

hack the ass end off of a 4runner, remove your bed and cut off the back of your ex cab, and then weld that e together.

if you're going to throw seats back there and put a cap on, you WANT a full roll cage. i say build a frame for a soft top, and then mount seatbelts on the front posts. the kids and friends would love a soft top more, especially with no sides or back on.

 

that would be cool, if you could figure out a way to make a lip and bolt the cap on like a first gen 4runner with a rubber gasket

 

my dad used to do this with me and my sister in his 94 chevy 1500...

it was some of the funnest times of my life back there, but one idea... dynamat the bed and campershell... it gets LOUD back there and on long trips i wanted to kill myself when the batteries died in my cd walkman...

what he did was mad a simple crossbrace structure that sat on the tops of the wheel wells... coverd that in 3/4" particle board and put a queen size matress on top of that...

it was so much fun on long trips... cheap, easy to install, and makes for good storage space underneath...

 

It looks like the cap for the Nissan pickups that made them look like pathfinders.

I think you should cut a roll bar to fit inside the cab against the wall then cut the rear section out so you have a wide open enter from the back , then rollbar cross overs down the bed just the same height as the one in the front of the truck.

Once thats in place get some mobile home/travel trailer aluminum and shape a bed cover on top of the in place rollbar system and screw into the rollbar so if you want you can remove the top for the sunny day's(1st genish 4runner like) cut some windows into it for the rear and sides make a door on the rear bolt down some bench seats with a set of 4 or 5 way seatbelts and your good to go.

 

interesting idea, i like some of it, im thinking i can do the same with a normal fiberglass shell over roll cage and still remove it in the summer with a canvas top for shade.
