35" Tire Rant

35" Tire Rant
this is kind of a rant of sorts but i've been reading through alot of post recently and have noticed that alot of people wanna run 35s, and alot of peoples responses have to do with gearing and lift, both are obvious, respective answers. But it seems like alot of people are afraid to just use the little (meaning maybe around 2-3") lift they may already have. Most are thinking they need an SAS or some crazy amount of suspention lift. But what does that get you, sure I would love to lift my 4runner with a 4" IFS lift or torch it off and go SAS, but you c.o.g. raises and limits alot off road. Also i dont know about where everyone else wheels/offroads/whatever but around here there are alot of low trees and other things that would get in the way of a huge truck. Dont get me wrong, i have nothing against a lifted truck, but alot of the people who ask these questions about "how much lift do i need, i plan on running 35s" automaticaly thing huge lift. My 1990 4Runner has a 3" body lift and the t-bars cranked a bit and when i put my set of 35x12.50s on they had plenty of room. They only rubbed on the front valence...if i would have got out and spent the 15 mins to trim off some of that, i wouldnt have had any problems. I guess all i am saying is that people should really think about more than just straight-up lift. Of course, stock, ur not gonna be able to run 35s. 33s would work in most people situations most though. People should think more deeply into maybe cutting a bit, trimmng a bit here and there. Basically making things work with what you got. 35s are great to run, they are alot of fun and get u alot of places with the proper gearing. Just think a little bit about your needs and dont be afraid to put your Yota under the knife and trim a bit!
Hey just remember the Early Bronco's with their stock uncut fenders..tiny tires on there stock..cut the rear fenders out..bam big ol tire
Thanks for hearing me out guys (and girls)

Right the frock on, dude! That's what I like to hear. I can't live with anything smaller than 35"x12.5". 3" body lift, torsion bars up, 6.25" backspaced rims, NO HUGE RUB. I have not changed a thing, I just let the new set of tires push back what they needed to. NOT NOTICEABLE DAMAGE, unless you wanna get real close and stick your head in my wheel wells.
My reason pure and simple: Smaller tires can't do everything my 35's can, period.

A guy i know is running full width toyota axles, on 37's, and is shorter than a guy running a 4" all pro sas with a stock toy axle on 35's. Wider is where its at, my friends, if the laws in your state allow it.
Not only does he have a lower COG, but hes got so much width that there is no tipping that baby at any reasonable angle. The 12.5" tires are COMPLETELY outboard of the fenders.

I still run 33s mainly (I do have a set of 35s but have not had them off-road yet). 33s can do 98% of the trails where I am located. There a few trails that need 35/37/+++ size tires to get through, but those tend to be the hardcore purpose built trails and I generally don't get too excited by spending all day going under a mile up some dry wash:

I also find running 33s on the moderate to harder trails keeps things interesting. I know a lot of folks who have gone 35+ and are totally bored unless they hit the toughest trails. The easy and moderate trails are so tame that they don't want to go out and run them.

4Crawler: I like that way of thinking, and it seems to me it would do alot of people alot of good to consider it.
Nowadays everyone seems to be concered with gas milage, especially on a DD(ok...I know a guy with 52's that doesn't give a flying fiddlers ÅÅÅÅ...but it's an offroad tow rig). 31's or 33's give keep your gas milage from going down the crapper, and keep more trails more interesting.

it looks like alot of people are getting away from the original reason for me goin on that rant...it was b/c people keep asking how much lift they need and whatnot, and my explination on how to keep it low and trim and think a little more about their goals, it has nothing to do with why or why not a 35" tire is superior to another size, it just seems as tho there was alot of posts about 35s... and since i ran 35s on my 4Runner with it sittin low i figured i'd voice an opinion

I just want everybody to try them once, at least. They're not in the least bit addictive.
I'm with ya on this thread. More folks should do whatever it takes and run some 35's. Right?

Ugh... I was perfectly happy planning on going 33x12.50 until seeing this thread.
Now I'm kind of happy my truck had a 2" BL when I bought it.
Maybe I will go 35x12.50 and trim the beegeezus out of my fenders.
Which means I'll have to go 5.29, and might as well throw in a locker or two while I'm at it. Cheers

Hey, I'm all for running the biggest tire you can with the least amount of lift (hell, I run 34's that are the same diameter as 35" MTR's with NO lift!)
I'm just saying that unless your tires are worn out and NEED replacing, there are better places to spend money on your rig than 35's ... armor, lockers, ...

Interesting post actually. I am/was in a related, but not a cookie cutter, situation as described in the first post.
I started the road to where I am tire/lift wise by running 33x12.5s w/no lift (well almost-2" shackles and 1" tbar lift). Then Allpro SAS w/33s. And now all custom (still leafs) w/full width axles. I am at roughly 6+ inches of lift w/35s for the street as it is my dd. But soon will be regeared and running 40-42" tires for weekend duty. But the plan is to lower the suspension 2-3" in concert w/the rest of the immediately remaining mods. Lower is better and wider is the same a lower. Hence lower plus wider is GREAT.
Big lift for 35s? Not needed.
