you're not lookin' in the right places. the 1st gen body style is arguably the 3rd most popular toyota truck in the toy dept. after the old and new FJs.

here's a cool one:

to find the older, 80s trucks, search "hilux".

so here's what ive been up to.

chopped off the roof, sanded everything down, added wood planks in the bad, painted it o.d green, trimmed the bed (to look like my truck) and painted it silver to look like alluminum.

(noticed the trimmed front valance)

still have to add the rest pof the "wood planks" (tooth picks ) wouldve used popsicle sticks, but they werent the right scale....and the fender wells are geting green paint to look like my ammo cans.

you need to use some acid and make holes in the side of the bed..
and then use a piece of tube out the side for another sweet exhaust stack..

i found some really awesome customized 4Runners today. kudos to the guy who crafted these up. i really wish i had the steady hands and patience to do this kind of thing.

this one was cut and converted into a standard cab pickup.

this one was custom painted and light bar (a paper clip!) added:

and this thing is just sick. how many of us wish we could do this kind of conversion so well on a real truck!!!

mad props to the customizer!

this one appears to have been done by a different guy who swapped the body to a new chassis. longer and wider wheelbase, awesome!

you can see with this one, a lot of hard work to create a pickup bed and back window....

...because here's another great pic i found of one with the top cut off, and you can see there's a huge chunk of metal inside the tailgate for the rear fastening point and the cab is wide open typical of a 4Runner:

EDIT: I HATE WHEN PEOPLE DELETE THEIR PHOTOBUCKET PICS. sorry these pics vanished so i deleted the dead links.

of course, custom body fab is less work at 1:64 scale than 1:1 scale, but still, awesome creativity and craftsmanship by these guys.

...there are lots of 2nd gen 4Runner toys to be found on the web. sometimes you have to search "hilux surf", but there's a bunch, including some very cool 1:25 scale models. google IMAGE search "4runner tamiya" or "4runner majorette" to see some examples quickly.

For those of you that have followed this post there is a red version out now. I came back from work one day and my wife had bought my son one and she has since bought me two. One of them will stay in the wrapper and the other one I am going to salvage tires and parts from his other broken hot wheels and matchbox cars to do a "build up" to match how my current toyota looks.

I am in the middle of packing my house up to move from alaska to texas so I dont have them available to take pictures of. I will as soon as we get to texas and we can unpack.

FYI, If you are talking about the red 4runner with the gold stripes, it has been out as long as the light blue one, if not longer. Take a peak back in this thread, you will see many of them.
