1998 4 runner starter issue

Quick question folks:
I have a 1998 4runner SR5 V6. Recently upon start, I will turn the key and nothing happens. If I move the key back and fourth several times it usually ends up cranking just fine (but seems to be getting worse-requiring more key turns). I have heard that the connectors to the solenoid on the starter get corroded and can cause this issue.

-Can I simply clean the connections, or should I just get a new starter?
-If I need a new part, is the solenoid available as an individual part?
-Is it easier to get to the starter through the wheel well or from the bottom?

*Thanks in advance, any input is appreciated.

when you turn it over and nothing happens do you hear a click? repeated turn overs should sound like click, click, click, until it finally finds a good spot in the starter and turns over. if so its a bad connection, or more likely a bad starter. if not and there is no sound what so ever when you turn it from run to start then its likely the ignition cylinder switch that has failed. i hope this helps.
