1988 Toyota pick up having issues with the fuel tank

It seems as though the truck will only use the first half of the gas in the fuel tank. When the fuel gauge indicates a half tank left, the truck will sputter and run out of gas.

My initial thought was that maybe the fuel gauge is just broken. But after about 4 tanks of this going on, it will consistently top off with only $26 of fuel ~ 6.5gal.

This is a 1988 22re 4x4 single cab short bed.

not sure what your problem is, but have you tried running some kind of injector cleaner/ fuel stabilizer through it? also, your fuel pump may be malfunctioning or on of your lines of the sending unit is rusted/ broken.

What would using a fuel stabilizer do? And an injector cleaner would clear up clogs if there was one?

I am guessing your fuel pump is weak or the sock to the pump is really dirty. Go to my 88 build thread and on the first page I have some pics of what I am talking about. How is your fuel filter?

You can get a fuel pump for $30 or so on the ebay site I have listed. Atr a parts store or Toyota the cost is much more expensive. I have replaced pumps on several trucks and they work great. Probably just need to go thru your fuel pump assembly.
