I noticed on my sunvisor it said to service the airbag after 10 years, then every 2 years after that. Does any have an idea of what this service requires, how much $$, etc.
thanks

From what I've heard this service was recommended on airbags when they first started using them because nobody knew how long they would last. But as there isn't really any way of testing the airbags, except for setting them off, the service isn't any more than looking to see if the airbags are still there. I would just ignore the notice and hope they work if and when you need them. The only other option I can see is to put new ones in.

Federal Law requires that all automobile manufacturers provide a 100% lifetime guarantee on all SRS equipment (Airbags, Automatic Seat Belt Mechanisms, etc). The "service" is more like an inspection/test, and is probably useless and free at the dealer.

This is a bit of a hijack, but is relational to safety system maintenance:
I have been to two dealerships trying to get my seatbelt retractors replaced for free because of this. In the front page of the owners manual it says they will guarantee the safety systems.
To me, the fact that they wont retract means that part of the system has failed. How do I know it will still catch correctly in an accident? After discussions with service managers, no one even considered replacing it for free.
Maybe we can start a class action movement for new seat belt retractors

Seatbelts aren't considered 'SRS' equipment. That first S is 'supplemental', which means in addition to the primary restraint equipment, ie seatbelts, or the steering wheel if you don't use themOriginally Posted by celica

contact toyota corporate if you want, but a seatbelt isn't SRS. SRS is airbags or automatic seatbelt mechanisms.
i had a faulty seat belt actuator (one of the mechaical/automatic seatbelts on the door frame) in a 1990 accord w/ 262k miles. took it in and dealer said "nope". called honda, complained, opened a "case" with them and said if i ever got into an accident and the seatbelt failed that i'd (or my next of kin) be suing for MILLIONS instead of the hundreds it would cost them to fix it, etc. they told me to take it back in for a diagnostic. dealer looked it over and said that the failure was in the seatbelt actuator itslef and not in the door mechanism. honda told them to replace all defective parts in the seatbelt system under WARRANTY - on a 14 year old car with 262k miles... don't see that every day. the dealer billed honda for over $700 on a car that i only paid $1k for.
i got two new actuators & one new belt w/ new retractor.

So its just SRS- I knew I was wrong somewhere. Regardless, I think they should recall that and fix it because so many people's seatbelts won't retract.
I have had horrible experiences with those seatbelts that automatically come down the door pillar like in your Honda.

your regular seatbelt is NOT, yet the automated version is... crazy.
