Unhappy wont turn over after new timing chain

hello.i just replaced the timing chain/sprockets on my '86 4runner,22re(non-turbo).i got everything all buttoned back up and now it will not turn over.it does make a single click when i turn the key but thats it.i have checked the electrical connections and not seen anything loose.could my starter have died just as i did this.seems odd.my haynes manual leads to the battery, which is new and carrying just over 12v,or the main solenoid contacts,or the starter itself.any ideas greatly appreciated,i really need this vehicle.thanks

I've got the starter click too, and usually at the most inconvenient times, ie stalled it in traffic, or just in a hurry. There is a write up of how to replace the contacts on your starter,, but I will leave my truck in 1st or 2nd and rock the truck back and forth and try again. Sometimes I'll have my boy tap on the starter while i try to start it.

this happened to me when doing my chain replacement, but it happened when we were trying to bump the starter at the beginning of the job!

I'm with Garrett - triple check your grounds, etc. My battery cables turned out to be the culprit - the connection was so bad that it was arcing and starting to fuse parts of the (frayed) batter wire to the contact on the battery. I have new battery cables now.

Always worth checking them all, wire brushing contacts, and using some dieletric grease to connect them and guard against future corrosion.

This may not be your cure, but it's a logical candidate. I also tapped the starter and this helped (which you've done).

GOOD LUCK!!!

have you turn the motor over by hand? also you might check voltage at the battery post on the starter while cranking. if it falls off under load more than a couple of volts it is between the battery and starter.

Replace the starter contacts they will be about $20.00 at Toyota Stealership!!!

these are usually the click and bad connection!! I replaced my starter and later found I could have gone the cheap route and replaced the contacts about $140.00 cheaper!!

Remember in the Future to Search, and Google is your best friend when you can not find it through the search on this forum!!!
