Spade on starter lose. Check to see if loose.

Worn starter contacts. Next time it clicks, hit starter with a hammer.

Simpler. I'm gonna suggest that it's either your positive or negative battery cable not properly connected or grounded/corroded. When this stuff happens to me that's almost always the reason.

im with krytellan. ^^^. that sounds like corroded battery terminals. I replaced my cable clamps with big huge marine ones. does much better.

I had this problem after I put the battery cables on without cleaning them... clean the terminals real well and the 'loops' on the end of the + and - cables.

I first tried tapping the starter figuring it was that, but I should have cleaned the cables first.

i would say you should cut back some of the pos, or neg wire ans check for any corrison in the wire.

the i would cut out the bad stuff or bust out some white vinegar, clean up copper nicely

new cables are cheap from any parts store..

i have 2 neg, cables and 2 pos, cables on my truck,

i had the same thing you are having, i cut out bad wire and clean up the not so bad, it work just fine, but i went out and bought a thicker gauge wires cuz the cables were getting way to hot for my likeing when starting the truck...

if you change the cables and its still doing the same thing

you will need to pull your starter out of the truck.. and then you will need to take aprt your starter, you will see a copper plate inside where the solenoid plunger make a full bridge contact after the solenoid coil is engergized...
the piece of copper is less than 2.30 and that is usually the promblem in most starters

check your brushes and see if they need replaced..

if your a hand type of guy, you may have some copper laying around to make a new contact your self.. The solenoid plunger will really wear that copper out and its probbley not making a good connection any more due to any type of arching/burn marks on the copper plate..

the small wire is what sends 12v postive engergize your solenoid.

that wire will go into your ignition switch

u may have a loose connection on your ignition switch so check there aswell

My then 6 year old and I were out wheeling, knew the starter needed a love tap sometimes to start. We get BAD off camber and I stalled the truck with 2 wheels off the ground looking at the ground out the driver window. Had to get out of the truck and tap the starter with a rock. I then had to explain to my 6 year old why I hit my truck with a rock and why I'd better not catch him hitting my truck with a rock.

Glad you got it figured out!

Usually when a starter clicks but doesn't turn until tapped it is the Bendix gear sticking. My dad always bought Chrysler products and they all eventually had the same Bendix problem. Those Chrysler starters had a unique sound, I heard it all my life growing up. When I got my first Toyota and turned the key the sound of that starter took me back to my childhood it didn't occur to me then that Toyotas would suffer from stuck Bendix syndrome. I drove my '82 for a year and a half like that but just kept a short piece of broomstick handy to reach through the passanger side wheel well between the frame and body to tap my solenoid. That starter eventually died with about 200,00 miles on it. I got my monies worth out of it!
