I drive an 87 runner everyday since my wife wrecked her car. Getting 22-24 mpg with freeway driving. I've never been happier going to work lol. Bought it with 176k & a bad motor. Refreshed a motor I was saving for a core & have put 10k on it.

Yeah it will do it, but I think you would be more comfortable at 65. Mine does 70-75 with SA, 35's, and 5.29s but thats about all she's got. And it makes a hell of a racket too, but more from the tires than the engine.

If you are looking for a vehicle to drive on a long ride to work of say 60 plus miles one way at speeds of 70 to 75 mph.

It can be done but I know I would rather have something more suited to that type of driving with at least 2 or more times the horse power. To be had from a mostly stock 22REC.

Besides I avoid interstate high ways as often as I can

Mine has slightly larger than stock tires, I believe stock are pretty much 28's, I have (basically) 30's and it is just about perfect for me. I can drive 80 with no problems from the truck, and it doesn't sound like it's about to explode with the 22re and an automatic.

Now the annoying thing about driving fast in a old Toyota is not maintaining speed, it's getting up to speed that's the problem. I've learned to simply adjust how I drive, but any 4x4 mated to a 4 cylinder engine will be slow to get up to speed, and it will probably have a hard time keeping up on hills (mine does).

When I'm driving on the highway (which isn't too often) I cruise at about 70, and if I know there's a big hill coming up then I speed up before I get there because otherwise I'll find myself dragging along at 50 3/4 of the way up the hill.

Just realize that an older Toyota 4x4 isn't an ideal highway vehicle, not that you can't use one to commute (because a lot of us on yotatech do), but think about realistically how badly you want a truck that's going to get pretty poor gas mileage (at least compared to cars), and be really slow at getting up to speed. Before you buy one, drive it on the highway and make sure you know what I mean by slow, because I'm really not exaggerating about it's slowness!

With that said, best of luck with your Toyota search!
